A Historic Triumph: Cypress Claims its First CIF Title
In the spring of 1983, the Cypress High School softball team, a relatively young program at the time, was on the brink of history. After opening its doors just a decade prior in 1973, Cypress was eager to make its mark on the Southern California softball scene.
Led by the skilled guidance of Coach Gordon Mullins, the Centurions had steadily improved over the years. However, they had faced tough losses to Righetti High School in both 1980 and 1981, falling by narrow 1-0 margins. These defeats fueled the team's determination to reach new heights.
The 1983 season proved to be a turning point. With a strong core of talented players, the Centurions battled their way through the regular season and into the CIF-SS Division 4A playoffs. Their journey led them to a rematch against Righetti High School in the championship game.
In a thrilling contest, Cypress emerged victorious, defeating Righetti by a score of 5-2. This historic win marked the first CIF-SS championship for Cypress High School, a monumental achievement for the young program.
The 1983 championship team will forever be remembered as pioneers, laying the foundation for future success in Cypress High School athletics. Their victory ignited a passion for softball within the school community and inspired generations of athletes to come.
