What you will submit consists of only ONE part: a reflection (this can be only written OR depicted by art followed by a paragraph)
For this mini-assignment, you will explore a stereotype or injustice that has affected you personally in some way. You will think about why you chose the stereotype/injustice and how this stereotype/injustice has affected you in your life. You can then choose to present your thoughts in any mode you would like -- it could be in writing as a narrative, or a video post where you explain it orally, or a poem, or a piece of artwork, etc. The aim is to understand more about how stereotypes/injustices affect us in general through focusing on how one stereotype/injustice has influenced us in our identity.
Think about your social categories and which ones you feel affect most how you are perceived by others. Select one category and list some stereotypes/injustices that you have been exposed to. Select one that you feel has affected you strongly in some way.
Sit quietly with yourself and focus on the stereotype/injustice you have selected. How does it make you feel and why? How does it affect you? Why did you choose it? What stories and feelings and memories does this stereotype/injustice cause you to recall?
Optional: Conduct some online research to see if you can find out more about that stereotype/injustice. Where does it come from? What is behind it? How does it affect those who are the object of the stereotype/injustice?
Present your thoughts and feelings. If you choose to write a narrative, there is no set length -- it might be a couple of paragraphs or longer. If you choose some form of art, you will also need to add one paragraph that briefly describes what you were trying to depict, what you have learned from this focus on one stereotype that deeply affects you, and how this can inform who you want to become and how you want to be the change. What is important is that you are thinking deeply about a personally relevant stereotype and trying to understand more about yourself through this deep focus.
If you choose to write a narrative or do a video post: Introduce the stereotype/injustice -- what it is, why you picked it, (optional background information on it from research). Then explain how this stereotype/injustice has affected/continues to affect you -- you can write about how it makes you feel and why, effects on your life, stories you can recall from your life related to it, ways you have responded to that stereotype/injustice being applied to you, etc. Whatever you include here is for the purpose of exploring how that stereotype/injustice has affected you. End with some concluding remarks -- for example what you have learned about yourself from this analysis of a stereotype/injustice, what meaning you have found in it, how it has influenced your identity, what you wish for in relation to it. How can it inform who you want to become and how you want to be the change?
Note: if you choose to do a video post, please share the video with me and then submit a document to Turnitin that simply states you have submitted a video post to me on this.
If you choose to do some kind of visual art or poetry: Write the stereotype/injustice at the top, then copy an image of your art into your document, and then end with a brief explanation of what you were trying to depict, and some concluding remarks -- for example what you have learned about yourself from this focus on a stereotype/injustice, what meaning you have found in it, how it has influenced your identity, what you wish for in relation to it. How can it inform who you want to become and how you want to be the change?
See my example if you find it helpful. Please remember, there is no one way to do this assignment. Mine is a narrative since that is what I felt comfortable doing this time. Please choose a way you feel most comfortable expressing yourself about your chosen stereotype/injustice.
