For this assignment, you are going to write a reflection on your experience with preparing for and leading your group-led lesson on a social category. The purpose of this assignment is to help you develop the skill of reflecting on an experience in a way that can help you to understand yourself better and use that understanding to make goals for yourself going forward. This skill of personal reflection for the purpose of growth is one that can help you throughout your life journey as you endeavor to "be the change".
Please note: if you would prefer to do the reflection orally, you are more than welcome to record a video. If you do this, please send me a link to the video by email (I recommend saving your video to Google drive and sharing with me).
Think about your experience with preparing for and leading your group-led lesson on a social category. What were some of the feelings you had? Why? What aspects went well? What challenges did you face? How did you respond to any challenges that arose? What did you learn about yourself and about working as a group?
Then choose ONE point that you would like to explore further. We will call this a learning point -- an area that you would like to think more deeply about in relation to who you are, where you are now and where you would like to go -- i.e. what you can learn from focusing on that one point and how you can apply that learning going forward.
In your reflection, include:
Introduce the learning point of focus and why you chose to focus on it
Provide a brief description and analysis of what happened in your preparation/leading of the group-led lesson that led to your wanting to reflect on it -- consider including what happened and how you felt, how you responded, and why
Conclude with what you have learned about yourself through this experience and through your reflecting on this experience, and how this learning can inform your actions going forward.
You will not be graded on this assignment. However, completing it counts as part of your participation grade. You should attempt to focus on a learning point that is meaningful to you, and your ability to demonstrate what you have learned about yourself and how this learning can inform your actions going forward.
You can look at my example if you find it helpful (Please look at draft 2 -- you can also compare my draft 1 and 2 if you want to see what changes I made when I revised it). This example, while not about a group-led lesson, is an example of the type of reflecting on a group activity that I am talking about. Please note that the length is not important. Mine is probably longer than many of you will choose to write because I tend to need to write more in order to reach the kind of meaningful learning about myself that is the purpose of this type of reflecting. You may choose to write less, but you will probably need a couple of paragraphs to achieve the aim of the assignment.
