What you submit for this assignment consists of FOUR parts: your limiting story, your new story, making your new story a reality, and positive affirmation.
For this assignment, you will identify and think about a story you tell yourself that may be limiting you in some way, and then write (or video-record) about how you can change this story into a more empowering one. The purpose of this assignment is to help you become more self aware of negative or limiting ways you may identify yourself, and to develop the practice of trying to change these identities into more empowering and positive self-concepts.
Make sure you have read Lovelyn Bettison How to change your life by changing the stories you tell yourself. The assignment steps are based on this reading. Include these 4 parts in your submission:
The limiting story: Identify a limiting story you may be telling yourself. Describe it and how it makes you feel and explain why you picked this story. Explore why you might be telling yourself this story.
The new story: Shift the story from negative to positive, to make it more empowering. Describe your new story and how that will make you feel. Support your new story by looking for existing evidence. Write down concrete examples of evidence from your life to support your new story.
From imagination to reality: Associate your new story with positive emotions through visualizing concretely something positive related to your new story. Write down the positive words you might tell yourself and describe the positive images you might visualize. Make a plan of how you will try to find opportunities to take action towards making your new story a reality, including concrete ideas, as well as how you will keep yourself motivated to realize your new story.
Write your positive affirmation on a paper and decorate it OR create an artistic depiction of your new story. Add an image of this art to the end of your document.
Note: I want to see evidence that you are trying to understand something meaningful about yourself and that you are trying to empower yourself to change for the better. The length is not important -- it might be a couple of paragraphs or longer if you would like.
Please see my example if you find it helpful. Of course, this is only one way to do this assignment. There are many limiting stories you might choose from and many ways to express yourself about that story. Just choose something meaningful to you that you care about and go from there.
