This assignment includes TWO parts: a summary of your interview, and analysis (and optionally photos)
For this assignment, you will interview a family member in order to learn more about who you are and how your family background has influenced you. Based on this interview, you will write up a narrative in which you briefly summarize what you learned about your family and yourself from this interview, as well as what connections and deeper insights you can make about your identity.
Choose a family member (or close friend who has known you a long time) that you would like to interview and think carefully about what you would like to focus on in that interview. For example, you could focus on a particular person in your family that you want them to talk about, or a particular time in their own life, or some significant moment that you want to know more about, or perhaps you want to know more about the values of the person you are interviewing. You can pick whatever seems interesting to you.
Prepare several (3-5) open-ended interview questions that you think could help your interviewee talk about the focus you want to know more about. You can phrase your questions like "Could you tell me about the time when..." or "What was my grandmother like?" or "Why did you choose to become a business person?" or "What is important to you in life and why?" or "How do you think that experience affected you?" etc. Be prepared to ask follow-up questions related to the answers they give. The interview can be about 20-30 minutes long and can be in any language you feel comfortable with. You should ask to record it so that you can listen to it again later. Listen and take notes on anything that stands out to you.
Write a narrative about the interview. This narrative should include introductory remarks about who you interviewed and why, and a description/summary of what you learned that relates to the focus you are interested in.
Then add in some analysis about what the information means to you. What insights you have gained through this interview into how your family has influenced you in your identity? What have you learned about who you are, who you want to become and how you want to be the change?
Consider adding in some photographs if you can.
The length of this narrative is not important -- it can be a couple of paragraphs or a couple of pages. What is important is that you are able to learn something about who you are because of family influences.
See my sample if you feel it can help you. For my interview with my dad, I asked the following questions:
What can you tell me about your grandmother Lulu and the stories you have been told about her? What stands out to you?
Why are you proud to be her grandson? How do you think she influenced your life?
How do you think her commitment to social justice affected your own care for social justice?
