December brought us snow days, movie nights, assemblies, and so many special classroom activities. I wrapped up eating lunch with all third-grade students. We discussed what it means for students to feel welcome, safe, capable and known at Ilalko. They also shared with me their great ideas for improving our school.

Great Ideas from Third Grade Students

Third Graders would like to... visit other classes during lunch time, decorate the school more, increase recess equipment, school-wide extra recess, more science, pet day, pottery classes, more clubs, coding, pajama days, teach students honesty, student listen to their teachers better, stop fights at bus stops, please help my bus with behaviors, class pets, an inside recess room, bring a stuffed animal to school day!

Great Things are Happening at Ilalko

Some of these third-grade wishes have already been granted. Thanks to our generous PTA we have added more recess equipment to the playground. We have also been working on updating our front entrance displays to reflect information about different cultures in our building.

In November, we focused on Native American heritage and Ms. Enz coordinated a beautiful display. If you stop by school in January, you will find our current display case features a timeline of the life of MLK with artwork from third grade students. We have also added a wall of black history heroes in honor of the Black History month coming in February.

We are communicating with our transportation department to make plans for connecting with bus drivers to partner with them around making sure students feel safe on the bus and the drivers know they have our support. We are excited to partner with these important adults who are the first people to see children in the morning and the last to see them at the end of the school day!

This month we also celebrated the Hour of Code. Students learned about coding using online programs, and also did paper coding to learn about the concepts. You can see more photos of our coding activities on facebook.

What’s coming this month?

When we come back in January we will begin our Winter benchmark testing. These tests include monitoring students' reading fluency as well as their progress in reading and math as measured by the iReady Mid-Year assessment. At this point in the year, we hope that students have made it to 50% of their annual goal.

¡Feliz año nuevo familias!

Diciembre nos trajo días de nieve, noches de cine, asambleas y tantas actividades especiales en el salón de clases. Terminé de almorzar con todos los estudiantes de tercer grado. Discutimos lo que significa para los estudiantes sentirse bienvenidos, seguros, capaces y conocidos en Ilalko. También compartieron conmigo sus grandes ideas para mejorar nuestra escuela.

Visite otras clases durante la hora del almuerzo, decore más la escuela, aumente el equipo de recreo, recreo adicional en toda la escuela, más ciencias, día de mascotas, clases de cerámica, más clubes, codificación, días de pijamas, enseñe honestidad a los estudiantes, escuchen mejor a sus maestros, detengan las peleas en las paradas de autobús, ayuden a mi autobús con el comportamiento, mascotas en la clase, un recreo interior, ¡traigan un animal de peluche a la escuela!

Grandes cosas están sucediendo en Ilalko

Algunos de estos deseos de tercer grado ya se han cumplido. Gracias a nuestra generosa Asociación de Padres y Maestros, hemos agregado más equipo de recreo al patio de recreo. También hemos estado trabajando en la actualización de nuestras pantallas de la entrada principal para reflejar información sobre las diferentes culturas en nuestro edificio.

En noviembre, nos enfocamos en la herencia de los nativos americanos y la Sra. Enz coordinó una hermosa exhibición. Si pasa por la escuela en enero, encontrará que nuestra vitrina actual presenta una línea de tiempo de la vida de MLK con obras de arte de los estudiantes. También hemos agregado un muro de héroes de la historia afroamericana en honor al mes de la historia afroestadounidense que se realizará en febrero.

Nos estamos comunicando con nuestro departamento de transporte para hacer planes para conectarnos con los conductores de autobuses y asociarnos con ellos para asegurarnos de que los estudiantes se sientan seguros en el autobús y que los conductores sepan que cuentan con nuestro apoyo. ¡Estamos emocionados de asociarnos con estos importantes adultos que son las primeras personas en ver a los niños por la mañana y los últimos en verlos al final del día escolar!

Este mes también celebramos la Hora del Código. Los estudiantes aprendieron sobre codificación utilizando programas en línea y también codificaron en papel para aprender sobre los conceptos. Puedes ver más fotos de nuestras actividades de codificación en Facebook.

¿Qué viene este mes?

Cuando regresemos en enero, comenzaremos nuestras pruebas de referencia de invierno. Estas pruebas incluyen el seguimiento de la fluidez de lectura de los estudiantes, así como su progreso en lectura y matemáticas, medido por la evaluación de mitad de año iReady.

En este punto del año, esperamos que los estudiantes hayan llegado al 50% de su meta anual.

Highly Capable Program Nomination

The Auburn School District is now accepting referrals for the 2023-2024 Highly Capable Program, a program that serves exceptionally intelligent, intellectually gifted students whose needs may not be easily met in the general education setting. Once a student is identified as highly capable, he/she is entitled to Highly Capable program services from the date of eligibility through graduation; annual testing is not required.

Nominations close February 17, 2023. Screening considers nominees who are currently enrolled in grades Kindergarten through eleven. Selection for highly capable programs reflects state guidelines for identifying intellectually gifted students. If you feel your child should participate in further testing, but doesn’t meet screening criteria, you may nominate your child. Nomination forms are school counseling offices and are available online by selection the For Families menu, Highly Capable, and then Highly Capable Forms.
