Don't Forget To Vote on Feb. 13th

February 13 is election day. The Auburn School District has a ballot measure to renew the Educational Programs and Operations levy that expires in 2024.  The levy makes up 14 percent of the district budget and replaces the expiring levy. The levy pays for all athletics and activities. It also funds positions that are underfunded by the state, special education, transportation and more. The tax rate does not increase with this levy. More information is available on the Auburn School District website. Please remember to vote by February 13.

Books You "Otter" Know About

What are the Otter Awards? Books nominated for the Otter Awards are books that support children as they transition to reading chapter books. Nominations include books with larger font sizes, line spacing, white space, meaningful illustrations and developmentally appropriate topics for the reading needs of children making the leap from picture books to chapter books. These books sometimes receive less publicity than traditional chapter books, as a result the Otter Awards were created to draw attention to these very important books. Kid approval is an import factor in whether or note a transitional reader book makes the list. Ilalko has participated in this program for many years! Our third grade classes have received copies of the nominated books and are reading them in class.
Once they read the books they rate them and capture their thoughts in special journals.

Votes are due in May and the winner is announced in June.

Science Pilot

Did you know that 4th graders at Ilalko are piloting a new science curriculum called PhD Science?  Students are learning about Earth Science. Specifically, how the Grand Canyon was formed. In addition, they are engaging in engineering challenges related to weathering and erosion. We know that experiences like these help prepare our student to understand the world around them and expose them to exciting career possibilities. Students pictured are from Mrs. Svendsen's Class.

HELP WANTED!

Chess Club volunteer wanted! We are looking for a family member or community member to host a chess club for students during their recess. The club would meet once per week on a day of your choosing from 11:15-12:15. Knowledge of chess is beneficial but not necessary as we have plenty of "No Stress Chess" game sets that teach students chess. Volunteers would need to pass a background check. If you or anyone you know may be interested, please contact Kelly Maloney kmaloney@auburn.wednet.edu
