Principal's Message

Each morning during our morning announcements students are reminded and celebrated for following our school wide expectations of PRIDE. Prior to reciting our Pledge of Allegiance we recite the Husky Pledge. It goes like this, 

Husky Pride Pledge 

As a member of the Ilalko Community I will show my Husky PRIDE. 

I have a POSITIVE ATTITUDE I simply cannot hide. 

I RESPECT my fellow huskies, their spaces and their things. 

With Integrity, I make good choices even when no one is watching.

I am DEPENDABLE which means you can always count on me. 

I show EFFORT in my work, because it’s a great day to be an Ilalko Husky! 

We hope to collect feedback from staff, students, and parents in order to make our school a place where everyone feels welcome, safe, capable, and known. In addition to celebrating positive behaviors, we strive to hold high and clear expectations for students. 

Discipline Concerns and Reminders 

This month we are revisiting our discipline plan to ensure we are aligned, consistent, and culturally responsive when dealing with challenging behaviors on campus. We feel it is important to communicate with families the types of problem behaviors we are facing at school and we want to partner with you to put these behaviors to an end.  

First, we have seen and heard an increase in the number of students using racial slurs on the bus, on the playground, and even in the classroom. We take these reports very seriously. Some students are repeating things they have heard from other students. Our first step is to educate our students on how harmful these comments can be. We are asking that you please have a conversation with your child about how damaging racial slurs can be and these words are not welcome at Ilalko. If any student is caught using this hateful language at school they will not be allowed to return to class until we have a meeting with parents. They may also lose privileges such as recess time, end of year activities, or even the ability to ride the school bus. 

In addition, we have seen cell phones becoming a real problem during recesses and even outside school hours. Students are taking photos and videos of each other without permission. They are also accessing social media and using social media to harass or threaten other students. We can’t control what students are doing on Social Media, but parents can. Please check your child’s cell phone and review your expectations for responsible cell phone use. Children don’t realize the digital footprint they are leaving behind when they post to social media sites.

Students at Ilalko do not need cell phones at school. We have your contact information and telephones in every classroom. I know some parents feel that cell phones are necessary for safety. In our experience cell phones have made our school less safe. If your child must bring their cell phone to school it should be turned off and stored in their locker. We are not responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged cell phones. In addition, if we see cell phones out at school we will confiscate them and they will need to be picked up in the main office by a parent or guardian. 

Playground Partners 

This month we kicked off our new Playground Partners program. A Playground Partner is any caring adult who can come to school on a pre-scheduled date to interact with their student and his/her friends on the playground during recess, as well as eat lunch together.Our students enjoy special moments when their home and school communities connect. This is one way that we can bring families into the

life at our school! When the grown-up comes, we will take a picture of your child and their special grown-up and display it with pride. We’ve had multiple partners participate so far and both the adults and the kids are loving this opportunity for a special connection at school!

Counselor Appreciation Week 2/6-2/8

During the week of February 6-10th we celebrate and honor our School Counselor Mrs. Kaela Church and her Counselor intern Kristina Downing! 

School counselors have a very important and complicated job at the elementary school. Not only do you often find them providing direct support to students, they also facilitate processes for ensuring students get the testing and accommodations they need to be successful in school.

Our counselor, Mrs. Church, completes regular classroom guidance lessons, runs small groups, and participates as a member of our attendance team. She truly does more than we could list here AND we love and appreciate her very much! Thank you Mrs. Church for making our school better each and every day through your important work with staff, students, and parents. Thank you Mrs. Downing for your support and your enthusiasm for coming and learning with us at Ilalko.

Compromiso del orgullo husky

Como miembro de la Comunidad Ilalko mostraré mi ORGULLO Husky.

Esperamos recopilar comentarios del personal, los estudiantes y los padres para hacer de nuestra escuela un lugar donde todos se sientan bienvenidos, seguros, capaces y conocidos. Además de celebrar los comportamientos positivos, nos esforzamos por mantener expectativas altas y claras para los estudiantes.

Preocupaciones y recordatorios de disciplina

Este mes estamos revisando nuestro plan de disciplina para asegurarnos de que estamos alineados, consistentes y culturalmente receptivos cuando tratamos con comportamientos desafiantes en el campus. Creemos que es importante comunicar a las familias los tipos de comportamientos problemáticos que enfrentamos en la escuela y queremos asociarnos con usted para poner fin a estos comportamientos.

Primero, hemos visto y escuchado un aumento en la cantidad de estudiantes que usan insultos raciales en el autobús, en el patio de recreo e incluso en el salón de clases. Tomamos estos informes muy en serio. Algunos estudiantes están repitiendo cosas que han escuchado de otros estudiantes. Nuestro primer paso es educar a nuestros estudiantes sobre cuán dañinos pueden ser estos comentarios. Le pedimos que tenga una conversación con su hijo sobre cuán dañinos pueden ser los insultos raciales y estas palabras no son bienvenidas en Ilalko. Si se descubre a algún estudiante usando este lenguaje de odio en la escuela, no se le permitirá regresar a clase hasta que tengamos una reunión con los padres. También pueden perder privilegios como el tiempo de recreo, las actividades de fin de año o incluso la posibilidad de viajar en el autobús escolar.

Además, hemos visto que los teléfonos celulares se han convertido en un verdadero problema durante los recreos e incluso fuera del horario escolar. Los estudiantes se toman fotos y videos entre ellos sin permiso. También acceden a las redes sociales y las utilizan para acosar o amenazar a otros estudiantes. No podemos controlar lo que hacen los estudiantes en las redes sociales, pero los padres sí. Revise el teléfono celular de su hijo y revise sus expectativas para el uso responsable del teléfono celular. Los niños no se dan cuenta de la huella digital que dejan cuando publican en las redes sociales.

Los estudiantes de Ilalko no necesitan teléfonos celulares en la escuela. Tenemos su información de contacto y teléfonos en cada salón de clases. Sé que algunos padres sienten que los teléfonos celulares son necesarios para la seguridad. En nuestra experiencia, los teléfonos celulares han hecho que nuestra escuela sea menos segura. Si su hijo debe traer su teléfono celular a la escuela, debe apagarlo y guardarlo en su casillero. No somos responsables por teléfonos celulares perdidos, robados o dañados. Además, si vemos teléfonos celulares en la escuela, los confiscaremos y un padre o tutor deberá recogerlos en la oficina principal.

Playground Partners

Este mes lanzamos nuestro nuevo programa Playground Partners. Un Compañero en el patio de recreo es cualquier adulto cariñoso que puede venir a la escuela en una fecha preestablecida para interactuar con su estudiante y sus amigos en el patio de recreo durante el recreo, así como para almorzar juntos. Nuestros estudiantes disfrutan de momentos especiales cuando su hogar y su las comunidades escolares se conectan. Esta es una forma en que podemos traer a las familias a la

la vida en nuestra escuela! Cuando venga el adulto, tomaremos una foto de su hijo y su adulto especial y la mostraremos con orgullo. Hemos tenido varios socios participando hasta ahora y tanto a los adultos como a los niños les encanta esta oportunidad de una conexión especial en la escuela.

Semana de Agradecimiento al Consejero 2/6-2/8

¡Durante la semana del 6 al 10 de febrero, celebramos y honramos a nuestra consejera escolar, la Sra. Kaela Church, y su consejera interna, Kristina Downing!

Los consejeros escolares tienen un trabajo muy importante y complicado en la escuela primaria. No solo los encontrará a menudo brindando apoyo directo a los estudiantes, sino que también facilitan los procesos para garantizar que los estudiantes obtengan las pruebas y las adaptaciones que necesitan para tener éxito en la escuela.

Nuestra consejera, la Sra. Church, completa lecciones regulares de orientación en el salón de clases, dirige grupos pequeños y participa como miembro de nuestro equipo de asistencia. ¡Ella realmente hace más de lo que podríamos enumerar aquí Y la amamos y la apreciamos mucho! Gracias Sra. Church por hacer que nuestra escuela sea mejor todos los días a través de su importante trabajo con el personal, los estudiantes y los padres. Gracias Sra. Counselor Appreciation Week 2/6-2/10

Highly Capable Program Nomination

The Auburn School District is now accepting referrals for the 2023-2024 Highly Capable Program, a program that serves exceptionally intelligent, intellectually gifted students whose needs may not be easily met in the general education setting. Once a student is identified as highly capable, he/she is entitled to Highly Capable program services from the date of eligibility through graduation; annual testing is not required. 

Nominations close February 17, 2023. Screening considers nominees who are currently enrolled in grades Kindergarten through eleven. Selection for highly capable programs reflects state guidelines for identifying intellectually gifted students. If you feel your child should participate in further testing, but doesn’t meet screening criteria, you may nominate your child. Nomination forms are school counseling offices and are available online by selection the For Families menu, Highly Capable, and then Highly Capable Forms.
