This week, the teams got a bit of a break from regional prep, began to exolore shared interests/hobbies with their sub team partner, and did robot game.
On Monday/Tuesday the coaches gave the teams a bit of a break from regional prep. Last week the coaches had asked students to reflect and think about what kinds of activities they would like to do in robotics. One of the most mentioned activities was the Egg Drop Challenge traditionally done on the 1st and 2nd grade team. Since Monday was the day before Halloween and Tuesday was Halloween, the coaches decided to take advantage and switch things up a bit. Students really enjoyed revisiting this challenge!
While the students still have one expert to learn about, the stage manager, we have decided that the teams should begin to define their hobby/interest and problem for the innovation project. The first step was done this week: finding an interest/hobby that they share with their sub team partner and using either scratch, canva, mecabricks, LEGOS, or a drawing to share out this interest with the whole team. Some sub teams really struggled to find a hobby/interest they shared with their partner. Other teams, even though they struggled, liked that they learned something new about their partner and felt it brought them closer together. The last step was to present what the sub teams had made with the whole team.
Saturday, was our robot game day! Some sub teams are still working to solve one mission, other sub teams are working on their second or third, and a couple of sub teams are ensuring that their three solved missions are working consistently.Â
We have told students that Saturday, November 11 we will hold our first mini robot game competition. Essentially sub teams will have a chance to run all the missions they have solved. We will time the teams to see how much time it takes for them to run all the codes the sub teams have. This will be a great introduction to the robot game rules and will be an important lesson for teams, that sometimes, even if the program worked during practice, during the actual games things can go wrong. We will help students work to manage that frustration and ensure they are kind to another and themselves if and when mistakes happen.
