This course involves design through the study of textiles. Students investigate a range of topics including fabric colouration and decoration, historical and cultural influences on design, contemporary designers, and communication techniques. They also learn about textile manufacturing methods, the properties of fibres, yarns, and fabrics, and how textiles are used in everyday life and industry. The course examines innovations in textile technology, environmental sustainability, current industry issues, and the broader marketplace, with a particular focus on the Australian Textile, Clothing, Footwear and Allied Industries.
Throughout the course, students develop their understanding of design principles, fabric performance, and production techniques. They engage in creative and practical tasks that encourage experimentation and problem-solving. By exploring how textile materials are designed, made, and used in both local and global contexts, students build valuable skills in design thinking, project management, and hands-on production.

Recommendations
Who should do this course?
Students who are creative, enjoy hands-on learning, and have an interest in design, fashion, or textiles. It suits students who like to solve problems, work independently, and bring their ideas to life through practical projects. The course also provides useful skills for students considering further study or careers in fashion, interior design, product development, or other creative industries.
What I need for this course?
The Year 11 course requires the creation of two hands-on textile projects where students learn how to design, experiment, and construct textile items. These projects encourage the development of practical skills, innovation, and an understanding of how to select and manipulate fabrics for specific purposes.
A major highlight of the HSC course is the Major Textiles Project, which contributes 50% of the HSC mark. Students choose one of five focus areas and design a textile item or collection, supported by comprehensive documentation. This project allows students to express their creativity, apply their technical skills, and explore a personal area of interest in depth.
Students are responsible for the cost involved with their chosen projects in both Year 11 and Year12.
