The Year 11 Advanced English is for students who want to extend and deepen their critical reasoning and communication skills. Students will move from analytical reasoning to writing and thinking critically. This course fosters critical thought through posing questions, considering a variety of perspectives and refining meaning.
Students will develop responses that are informed, personal and considered. They will need to think deeply and bring a range of perspectives and ideas together in their writing.
Collaborative practices are an important part of the course and students need to be comfortable participation in dialogue, verbalising their thoughts and building on the ideas of others. Students should be prepared to refine and enrich their own personal responses in light of the ideas explored.
Year 11
The course has two sections:
· A unit of work called Reading to Write: Transition to English Advanced. Students explore texts and consolidate the writing skills required for senior study.
· Two additional modules: Critical Study of Literature, and Narratives that Shape our World in which students explore, and critically evaluate the ways in which texts and contexts shape and are shaped by different attitudes and values.
Year 12
The course has two sections:
· The Common module Texts and Human Experiences which is common to all HSC courses where students analyse and explore texts that portray universal experiences.
· Three additional modules which emphasise the shaping of meaning and representation, reflective writing questions of textual integrity, ways in which texts are valued, and the demonstration of the effectiveness of texts for different audiences and purposes.
