Textiles Technology is a creative and practical subject where you learn all about fabrics, fibres, yarns, and how they’re used in everyday life. You’ll explore how textiles are made, how they perform, and how they can be used to solve real design problems.
You’ll also look at textiles from historical, cultural and contemporary perspectives and learn how these influence trends and consumer choices. Through exciting design projects, you’ll get to explore your own ideas and express your creativity while learning to work independently and think critically.
Record of School Achievement
Textiles Technology is a 100 or 200 hour NESA course. Satisfactory completion of Textiles Technology will be recorded with a grade on the student’s Record of School Achievement.
You will study three main areas:
Design – Learn how to develop, communicate, and evaluate your design ideas.
Properties and Performance of Textiles – Understand how different materials behave and how to choose the right ones.
Textiles and Society – Explore how textiles impact our lives and reflect different cultures and time periods.
These areas are taught through different focus areas:
Apparel – Fashion and clothing
Furnishings – Textiles for the home
Costume – Clothing for theatre or performance
Textile Arts – Fabric used to create artwork
Non-Apparel – Other items like bags, toys, and accessories
To meet the course requirements, this subject is very practical – most of your time will be spent designing and making real textile items. These hands-on practical textile projects help you build confidence and skills in using a variety of textile materials, tools and equipment.
You will work on projects, where you:
Experiment with colouration, fibres and fabrics
Select and use appropriate tools, equipment and techniques
Learn to work safely by understanding Work Health and Safety (WHS) requirements
Create quality textile items that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing
You will also document your design process to show how your ideas develop from start to finish.
