Geography is the study of places, people and environments, and their interrelationships, and integrates knowledge from the natural sciences, social sciences and humanities. It develops students’ sense of curiosity about the places, environments and cultures that make up our world, enabling them to be more attuned to its diversity and complexity. Geography promotes understanding of the role of natural systems and human activity in shaping the world and how they may vary from place to place.

Geography values inquiry methods, ethical practices, critical analysis, reasoning, statistical literacy, holistic thinking, consideration of context, and spatial awareness. Fieldwork, in all its various forms, is central to geographical inquiry as it enables students to develop their understanding of the world through direct experience.

Who should do this course?
All students are suitable Geography candidates. Those who enjoyed Geography in junior years will continue to do so in senior years.
What I need for this course?
Students must complete an individual geographical investigation as part of the Year 11 course and complete a minimum of 24 hours of fieldwork over the year 11 and 12 course. This will involve excursion costs between $300 - $400. Students will be required to submit written, oral, graphical or multimodal reports.

How will this course help me in the future?
Geography assists students to prepare for employment as full and active citizens. A wide range of jobs have a geographic background. Many university courses will suit those with a background in Geography. The study of Geography at Tertiary level can lead to careers in Ecotourism, Environmental Law, Natural Resources, The National Parks and Wildlife Service, Marine Biology as well as the opportunity to act in advisory roles in government departments at Federal, State and Local levels. Some TAFE courses will acknowledge prior learning in Geography.
