Thomasville Heights Special Transfer Window

A Notice to Thomasville Families

Atlanta Public Schools anticipates a significant drop in the school zone population serving Thomasville Heights Elementary School. This decrease in school population necessitates the temporary closure of Thomasville Heights at the end of this current school year, 2021-2022.

Proposed rezoning to Slater Elementary School

APS is required to assign every school-aged child within the district to a zoned neighborhood school based on the location of their residence. Therefore, pending final approval by the Atlanta Board of Education at its June 6, 2022 meeting, students currently zoned for Thomasville Heights will be rezoned for Slater Elementary School beginning in School Year 2022-2023. Any elementary student who continues to reside in the neighborhood currently served by Thomasville Heights will be eligible for enrollment at Slater ES. Slater is an APS school operated in partnership with Purpose Built Schools Atlanta. Maps of the proposed rezoning are included with this letter.

Special administrative transfer process

Thomasville Heights families who are being rezoned to Slater may choose to request an administrative transfer to another APS neighborhood school with space available for their student(s). We will open a special administrative transfer window for families impacted by the closure of Thomasville Heights on Monday, May 23rd. This transfer window will remain available through Monday, June 27th. Administrative transfer applications can be submitted here: www.atlanta.k12.ga.us/transfers. Students granted an administrative transfer through this process must provide their own transportation to the school of their choice.

The special administrative transfer process will only be made available to Thomasville Heights families who can show that they will continue to reside within the City of Atlanta after the closure of Forest Cove.

Registration for School Year 2022-2023

On June 1, 2022 at 5:00pm, the district will hold a community meeting for the impacted families who reside in the area for proposed rezoning. The meeting will be held at the Thomasville Recreation Center, 1835 Henry Thomas Drive, SE Atlanta, GA 30315. During this meeting, impacted families will have the opportunity to learn more about the process for enrolling their students for School Year 2022-2023 and their options under the special administrative transfer process.

In order to register in an APS school next school year, students will have to show proof of residence in the City of Atlanta.
