Requirements

Public Speaking Category: Original Oratory (5-8 Minutes)


  • This is a persuasive speech that you write yourself intended to get listeners thinking or feeling a certain way about a particular topic
  • Usually topics are values-based and not policy-based (although either is acceptable)
  • Things to include
    • Attention-getting introduction
    • Clear thesis near the beginning of the speech
    • Clear organization (problem, cause, solution)
    • Solid knowledge presented (facts, background, definitions, possible solutions)
  • Speaking should be sincere, pleasant and convincing
  • Steps can be taken at appropriate transitional points
  • Gestures enhance
  • Face should show involvement, concern, enthusiasm

Credibility (at least 2 sources/cited in the speech)

Tips

  • Aim for 600-1000 words
  • Practice Methods
    • Watch yourself in the mirror
    • Record yourself
    • Read it backwards
    • Go people watching and look for people who talk/move like your character
    • Insert your introduction into Google Translator and play it. How does it sound?
