Introduction sets the theme, mood, scene (must include author and title)
Distinction between characters (characters should be believable)
May use a script
Needs to be funny
May be prose, poetry or play
Wacky or exaggerated characters convey humor
Define your character(s)
Think about quality of voice (gravely, airy, or normal)
Think about pitch (low, high, or normal)
Think about volume (soft, loud, normal)
Only use an accent if it is implied in the text. Don’t add random ones!
Think about character(s)’ actions:
Arms (straight, not much, or very big)
Hands (not fidgety, flappy, still)
Feet (no exaggerated rocking or jittery movement)
Think about Posture:
Chin (up, down, normal)
Back (straight, slouch, normal)
Shoulders (back, forward, normal)
Hips (forward, normal)
POPS (Each character has a different posture). So POP to each of these postures to show change in character:
Should be quick and smooth
Center around your core
Don’t move too many things at once
Keep it simple
Keep it natural
Practice Methods
Watch yourself in the mirror
Record yourself
Read it backwards
Go people watching and look for people who talk/move like your character
