Accuplacer Scores

The Accuplacer is a placement test. Accuplacer scores help you quickly determine whether you are ready to take a college-level course. There are three sections: Reading, English, and Math.

  • Your scores will show whether you are on target in reading, writing, and math.

  • If you have a low score in any area, focus your efforts there to improve before graduation.

  • Accuplacer is required for admission to 2-year colleges in South Carolina, including Tri-County Technical College.

  • Accuplacer scores determine your placement for dual credit courses.

Understanding Your Accuplacer Scores

Click on the image to the left to view a sample Accuplacer scoresheet. Near the top of the sheet, highlighted in yellow, is the phrase "Your Levels." The next three columns show your highlighted scores, each corresponding to a section of the test.

  • RPL (Reading Placement Level)

  • EPL (English Placement Level)

  • MPL (Math Placement Level)

Listed below your scores are different courses offered at Tri-County. Keep in mind that not all of those courses are available to you through our dual enrollment agreement. The columns to the right show what minimum score is necessary to qualify for the course.

Sample Explanation:

English Composition 1 (ENG 101) shows a RPL score of 25 and a EPL score of 25. The student in this sample card has a RPL level score of 30 and an EPL score of 30. This student's scores are higher than the 25-point minimum, so this student qualifies for ENG 101.

Now, look at an example math course. Analytical Geometry & Calculus I (MAT 140). It has no minimum required score for either Reading or English, but the minimum math (MPL) score for this course is 45. This student's MPL score is 10, which is significantly lower than 45. This student would not qualify for MAT 140.

If I have not taken the Accuplacer, should I test?

If you are interested in taking courses through Tri-County or Anderson University next year, you will need to have qualifying Accuplacer scores.

T.L. Hanna held Accuplacer testing for juniors from October 5-8. Juniors who did not test at Hanna may go to Tri-County or Anderson University to test. Click on the link below for detailed instructions.

What if I took the Accuplacer but did not earn qualifying scores?

Low scores show which area(s) you need to emphasize in your studies during your junior and senior year. Work hard to build your skills so that you will be ready for college coursework when you do graduate!

Students are not required to take dual-credit courses while in high school. If your scores were close to the minimum, you may want to retake that section(s) of the Accuplacer.

How do I retake the Accuplacer?

Remember that you need only to retake the section(s) of the Accuplacer for which you had a low score. See below for the printable information sheet.
