Dual enrollment- enrollment with a public school district of a child who is receiving CPI for the purpose of attending one or more courses, participating in extracurricular activities offered by the district (clubs, sports, music programs, courses at the high school or universities, or special education services). In addition, the district must provide appropriate instructional materials to dually enrolled students, if the parent, guardian, or legal or actual guardian so requests, on the same basis these materials are provided to regularly enrolled children. The reporting requirements, including Form A, apply to dually enrolled children receiving CPI under both Option 1 and Option 2.
Must be indicated on the CPI form by Sept. 15 each year
A student under dual-enrollment must receive at least 25% (a min of 2 classes) of their instruction by way of CPI, and no more than 75% by way of the district’s academic programs, which includes SYP programming (read about SYP below).
For a school that has an 8-period day such as AHS, this means he/she may take the equivalent of 6 periods as a dual-enrolled student through courses at AHS and/or SYP.
Learn more about Senior Year Plus (SYP)
Senior- Year Plus (SYP)- Enacted by the legislature in 2008, SYP was created to provide increased and more equal access to college credit and advanced placement courses. Courses delivered through SYP provide students the opportunity to take a rigorous college curriculum and receive, in many cases, both high school and college credit concurrently. A comparable course may not be offered at AHS to qualify for SYP courses taken at community colleges or universities. Transportation to and from college classes is the responsibility of the student.
SYP includes access to:
Advanced Placement courses- Registration for those courses take place on Infinite Campus, at the time regular courses are registered for, with the exception of AP Micro/Macroeconomics, AP Statistics and AP Computer Science. See AP Exam tab under AHS for more information on these.
PSEO (Post-Secondary Enrollment Options)- allows a student to take university level courses at any of the Iowa Regent schools for credit while enrolled at AHS. If approved for PSEO, the school district assumes the cost of the course and materials. If not approved, the course is still allowed to be taken, but cost is assumed by the student. Students in 11th-12th grade are eligible for PSEO; 9th-10th graders that are identified as ELP are eligible.
Concurrent Enrollment- Student enrollment in community college courses available via contracts with the public school, either on the campus of a local high school or on the campus/online at a community college.. A STUDENT DOES NOT NEED TO BE DUAL ENROLLED and can be IPI or CPI opt out TO TAKE PART IN CONCURRENT ENROLLMENT under SYP.
ELIGIBILITY: 9th-12th graders (NO ELP required for 9th and 10th grade students). CTE (see below) is available to only 11th-12th graders.
There are 4 concurrent enrollment options:
Courses taken at AHS which are DMACC courses. Dual-credit courses (ones offered at AHS for DMACC credit) may be taken at AHS or at DMACC in both online and on-campus modes.
Online courses at a community college
On-campus courses taken at a community college
Career academy courses taken at the Hunziker Center or other DMACC academies. These are sometimes called Career Academy or CTE (Career Technical Education). These classes provide area high school students with excellent educational opportunities. All DMACC Career Academy consortium programs are one year long (two semesters). Several academies offer a second year of programming. Students must complete Year 1 before enrolling in Year 2. Registration in these courses is handled by local guidance counselors and principals. Some of the educational programs include state-of-the-art facilities for auto collision, automotive technology, building trades, criminal forensics, culinary arts, health, teaching academy, visual communication/graphic design, career work experience, and welding. Concurrent Enrollment- Coursework offered through DMACC at AHS, on-campus (OCCO), online (OLCA) at DMACC, or CTE (Career and Technical Education) programs at DMACC.
CTE is available to 11th-12th graders only.
A student must be dual enrolled to participate in extracurricular activities or Senior Year Plus programming. However, concurrent enrollment MAY be accessed under Senior Year Plus as an IPI student.
Nicole Patton at AHS will need to approve concurrent enrollment courses for IPI students who wish to enroll in concurrent enrollment under SYP.
