🚩CHANGES FOR 25/26:Â
-The HEALTH OCCUPATIONS ACADEMY is now a 1 semester academy.Â
-The AUTO COLLISION ACADEMY is no longer offered ast of Fall 2024.
-The BUSINESS ACADEMY is now a year-long academy, rather than a semester academy.Â
-The WELDING ACADEMY which was held at Nevada High is no longer offered as an academy.Â
🚩CHANGES FOR 26/27Â
Building Trades is now a 1 year academy instead of 2 years AND there are curriculum changes to the academy.
Although you will see Welding is back on the offerings for the 26/27 school year, it may be a good idea to choose a 2nd academy as it's uncertain an instructor will be available to teach this academy at this time.Â
MAKE SURE YOU ENTER AMES HIGH SCHOOL as the student's SCHOOL so that ACSD pays for the academy.Â
Keep in mind that seniors have priority over juniors since this is their last opportunity to take Career Academy courses. However, do not let this discourage you! There is a waitlist, and the order is determined by the date/time you pre-registered. The earlier you pre-register, the higher your name will be on the waitlist. Academies can also be taken by 9th and 10th grade students, so long as the pre-requisites are met for the academies.Â
Confirmation of acceptance in the desired academy will be sent by a DMACC advisor on April 1.Â
Note: This is not registration for regular Fall 26 OCCO and OLCA DMACC courses (that registration opens mid-March and you will be notified by me when it is open). Registration for 26/27 DMACC courses held on the AHS campus will be completed when 26/27 AHS course registration takes place.
Proficiency Requirements are not necessary for enrollment in Career Academies.Â
LEARN ABOUT CAREER ACADEMIES IN THIS VIDEO
NOTE ANY CLASS LISTED IN EACH OF THE ACADEMIES MAY ALSO BE TAKEN INDIVIDUALLY (either OLCA OR OCCO) and NOT PART OF THE ACADEMY.Â
Students are provided a foundation of computer science and programming courses that will prepare them to create business solutions by designing, writing, and executing computer programs. Twenty-seven total DMACC credits can be earned in this academy (18 the first year and 9 the second year). Students will earn a Computer Languages diploma upon successful completion of all Academy courses and three additional core courses (not offered as part of the academy). Do you aspire to help others? Does the thought of working in healthcare excite you? Or is it just too much blood and guts? Don’t worry – healthcare pathways are available where you can still impact others, minus the blood and guts!
Have you considered a gratifying career in healthcare as a Patient Access Specialist? This role serves as the initial point of contact for patients and the face of the organization while advocating for the community's healthcare.
DMACC’s Patient Access Specialist Certificate program is 16 credits and may be completed online. Program courses are taught by instructors who have experience in the industry, providing best practices and guidance throughout the academic journey.
Upon completing the program, students may obtain positions with job titles such as Patient Access Specialist, Service Coordinator, Patient Advocate, Patient Experience Representative, etc. Many healthcare settings need the administrative services provided by the Patient Access Specialist to provide patient connections. This includes hospitals, clinics, health insurance organizations, home health agencies, etc.
If continuing your education is intriguing, the Patient Access Specialist program does ladder into other programs at DMACC, expanding opportunities in learning and in the field. Did you know that Iowa State University has a Bachelor of Healthcare Management? Opportunities abound!
