Whether your student attends a college, joins the military, or joins the workforce following high school, he/she will likely need a record of his/her high school coursework to begin that journey.
Regarding academic coursework: When your student begins taking high school-level courses, record the course name and the grade they earned on a transcript. On a separate document, or on a separate tab of a spreadsheet, if that is what is used, write a brief course description, which some institutions will require.
Your student should also compile a resume of his volunteer work, extracurricular activities, internship and/or work experiences, honors and awards, etc. Keep up on this information beginning your student's freshman year so it isn't overwhelming to try to remember later.
For more details and an example of a transcript, check out HSLDA's brochure or the above template I've provided.
AWARDING CREDITS
1 semester of college coursework = 2 semesters of high school work
AHS counts 1 credit/semester
Many homeschoolers count 1 credit/year
You may count 150 hrs of work = 1 credit, but don't have to. This is the HSLDA recommendation.
When creating the student’s home school transcript, the important point is to be consistent. If you show 0.5 credits for a one-semester home school course, you should also show 0.5 credits for a one-semester DMACC course. On the other hand, if you choose to show 1 credit for a one-semester homeschool course (as AHS counts credits), then you should also show 1 credit for a one-semester DMACC course.
ORGANIZING
One option is to organize a transcript by subject instead of by year, it can be easier to figure out where to put high school level work completed in 7th/8th grade or where to put a multi-year elective option.
List the date graduated on the bottom of the transcript.
Have AHS and DMACC credits listed on your homeschool transcript
Have a column of where classes were taken or add it parenthetically.
IMPORTANT: Although there are no minimum course requirements for homeschool high school transcripts, it is recommended that you check with the universities to which your student is applying to make certain course requirements are met. To see what AHS requires for graduation, as a guide, please see page 5 of AHS REGISTRATION BOOK.
Letter from AHS Counselor, JULIE BRYANT:
You will find an outline of the information located in your Document Resources in your Naviance Student account. Please carefully read and follow the instructions. If there are instructions that are not clear to you, please let me know and I will revise them so it makes more sense to you. Sometimes the student view is different from what I can see in my "student view."
Your transcripts have also been loaded into Naviance. Please remember to request your initial transcripts be sent to ALL colleges/universities you are applying to, even if they do not require it. For example, ISU, IOWA & UNI do not require initial transcripts, but please request it be sent to them anyway. If you end up attending any college/university that did not require an initial transcript when you applied, it will save you frustration and confusion in May. So be proactive!
See your counselor if you have any questions! Have a GREAT Senior Year!
