AHS takes a non-traditional approach to the Science pathways so that students are exposed to a wider array of science subjects earlier in their high school years and therefore have more freedom to further explore a certain branch of science later during their high school years.
The rationale for splitting up Foundations of Chem and Foundations of Physics into one semester courses is to give students more options when they get to their senior year while giving them enough of a foundation to explore more science courses.
Foundations of science courses are encouraged for all students. The sequence of foundation courses during 9th,10th, and 11th grade, followed by Advanced or AP Science coursework during 12th grade establishes a firm background for life or further study.
Pre-AP Science Courses are only offered to fulfill the intent of completing multiple science AP courses at Ames High by allowing for AP coursework in both 11th and 12th grade. Only sign up for Pre-AP Science if you want to start AP science coursework in 11th grade. Students may also take advanced courses as seniors.
