Subject Load Adjustments
Underloading of Subjects
Subject Load Adjustments
Underloading of Subjects
General Reminders
In the College of Fine Arts, academic loads per semester are classified as follows:
14 units and below – Underload
15 units – Minimum required load
18 units – Prescribed (normal) load per semester
Above 18 units – Overload
A student may be underloaded either:
From the start of the registration period, or
During the semester, such as by dropping subjects
(Note that the dropping process is separate from underloading)
Underloading may effect your eligibility for Latin honors.
To qualify for Latin honors, students must either:
Enroll in at least 15 units per semester, or
Enroll in the full prescribed load if it is less than 15 units.
An exception is made for students in their final semester:
If you're running for Latin honors and are underloaded during your last semester of your final year in the program, this will not affect your eligibility, and no supporting documents are required.
In all other cases, underloading is only excused for honors consideration if due to justifiable reasons, such as:
Health conditions
Unavailability of required courses
Verified employment as a working student
This provision is based on Revised UP Code: Art. 414 (as amended during the 884th BOR meeting on March 31, 1977).

Required Documents
It is the student's responsibility to prove the legitimacy of the cause(s) of underloading beyond reasonable doubt.
All supporting documents must be sworn and submitted within the same semester of underloading to the CFA College Secretary’s Office via email: cfacollegesecretary.upd@up.edu.ph.
Click here to access the permit to underload. Follow the instructions in the file carefully.
As an Industrial Design major, you must write an appeal letter addressed to the Chairperson of the Department of Visual Communication at dvc.upd@up.edu.ph.
Formatting Guidelines
Use this template.
Save your file using this filename format:
(Reason for Appeal) – (Surname) (StudentNumber).pdf
e.g., Request to Underload – Dela Cruz 202112345.pdf
Ensure your letter is neat, respectful, and concise, and that it includes all required information.
Submit the appropriate documents depending on your reason for underloading.
Important Notes
All documents (the underloading form, appeal letter, and applicable supporting materials) must be signed or endorsed by the following:
Registration Adviser
Program Coordinator
Department Chair
If you fail to submit the complete documentation to the CFA College Secretary’s Office by the last day of classes of the semester in which underloading occurred, any future appeal for Latin honors based on that semester will not be considered by the Committee on Student Admission, Progress, and Graduation (CSAPG).
Submitting these documents does not automatically guarantee eligibility for honors. You must still file an official appeal to the CSAPG before you graduate or during your final year in the college.
For further assistance, contact the Student Records Office regarding the appeal process.
