Free Write: Compare and Contrast Chinese parenting according to Amy Chua and American parenting. Then write about whether you agree or disagree with her parenting and why. Push yourself to include at least four reasons why.
Revision: Include transitional phrases in the beginning of your reasons. Each paragraph should begin with a transitional phrase.
Lesson
Silent Reading
Students will read the book they chose from the media center yesterday for 20 minutes.
Mini-Conferences
While students are reading, I will call students over to my desk and go over their goal from the Google Form they filled out yesterday. I will also ask about the book they chose and why they chose it.
Mentor Text
Students will read “Why Chinese Mothers Are Superior” by Amy Chua
Free Write
Compare and Contrast Chinese parenting according to Amy Chua and American parenting. Then write about whether you agree or disagree with her parenting and why. Push yourself to include at least four reasons why.
Tea Party
Students will get transitional phrases cheat sheet that shows different ways in which authors used transitional phrases. They will take their paper and walk around the room sharing their paper with a peer.
Revision
Include transitional phrases in the beginning of your reasons. Each paragraph should begin with a transitional phrase. After revising, students will share their revisions with a peer, and I will ask for one or two volunteers to share with the class by writing their before and after sentences on the board. If it is incorrect, we will revise it together.
