Free Write: Of what you saw, what bothered you the most? Why? What questions do you have about this problem? Do you think we can stop it? How? What questions do we need to answer in order to solve the problem? See the text we read for example questions. Adapt them to what bothers you if appropriate.
List: Students will create a list of possible questions that they can add to their Google Form Survey about what bothers them. This is the brainstorming for their final paper on evaluating and judging.
Lesson
Gallery Walk
Students will participate in a silent gallery walk. I will print out current event headings and images, and tape them on the wall in the hallway. Students will walk around the hall and observe, read, and ponder on the images and headings. They will bring their notebooks with them to record any impressions. When we go back to class, students will share their impressions with their peers and then the class.
Free Write
Students will be instructed to do the following: Of what you saw, what bothered you the most? Why? What questions do you have about this problem? Do you think we can stop it? How? What questions do we need to answer in order to solve the problem? See the text we read for example questions. Adapt them to what bothers you if appropriate.
Mentor Text I
As a class, we will read an example of what bothered a student. This is taken from “Real” News page 102-103 in Write Like This by Kelly Gallagher. We will discussed how we know it bothered him, what he did to know more about it, and we will analyze his data together.
Mentor Text II
Students will practice analyzing data by taking a Google Forms Survey I created. After students have taken the survey on a topic that bothered me regarding the current events, I will walk students through the process I followed when writing the survey. This will lead to our discussion.
Discussion
After students have taken the survey, we will discuss the following questions: How can I get more accurate data? Should I revise something in my form? Students create a list of questions similar to those of my Google Form so they can create their own form in the tomorrow.
Class Brainstorming
As a class, we will share what bothered them and one question that we could ask to know more about that topic. Once students have seen examples, they will be able to write a list of questions for the current event topic that bothered them.
List of Possible Questions for what Bothers You
Students will create a list of possible questions that they can add to their Google Form Survey about what bothers them. This is the brainstorming for their final paper on evaluating and judging.
Silent Reading
Students will read the book they chose from the media center yesterday for 20 minutes.
Mini-Conferences
While students are reading, I will call students over to my desk and go over their goal from the Google Form they filled out. I will also ask about the book they chose and why they chose it. To help them brainstorm for their final piece, I will ask them the following questions: What impacted you or bothered you the most out of the gallery walk? Why? What do you want to know about this topic? Who would know? Where would you go to find more information on this topic? Do you know anyone who knows more about this topic?
