Birds are some of the easiest and most exciting animals to identify in the outdoors. They can be found almost anywhere, they come in bright shapes and colors, and among vertebrates, are second only to fish when it comes to species diversity. There are nearly 10,000 species of birds around the world, and over 400 bird species have been recorded in the state of Pennsylvania alone! The following slides will take you through the basics of bird identification, starting with the features to pay attention to, an introduction to the common birds of Pennsylvania, and ending with an interactive workshop identifying birds using the Audubon Bird Guide app.
