About Question 5:


  • Question 5 on Language Paper 1 is worth 25% of your entire GCSE (40 marks).

  • You should spend around 45 minutes on this question.

  • Question 5 tests your ability to write creatively and imaginatively as well as use accurate spelling, punctuation and grammar.

You will have a choice of two different questions to answer. The first will be based on a stimulus such as an image and it may ask you to write a descriptive piece or narrative in response to the image. The second will be a statement asking you to write a description or narrative.

Here is an example of how the task will be laid out:

The five part plan:


Part 1: start big- wide lens - (description of the sky or landscape)

Introduce your character at the end of this paragraph, if you have one.


  1. Part 2: Contrast (introduce a very different idea)

  2. Part 3: Zoom in to a smaller detail (shorter paragraph)

  3. Part 4: Flash back

  4. Part 5: Return to the beginning - wide lens - have a clear change (cyclical structure).
