This box was cleaned out. Since it never hatched all the eggs were taken out with the nest. The nest can be used for future study.
Unfortunatly this nest is still not hatched. It is way too late now to expect any of the eggs to hatch, but the female is still sitting on them, and the male is still looking after her. Today we caught the female and banded her. Usually we never do this while the eggs are not hatched, but in this case it was the only option.
This nest has 6 eggs. The female tree swallow is currently incubating the eggs which are due to hatch on 6/12 at the earliest. Tree swallows incubate their eggs for 14 days at the minimum, and they start incubation on the second to last egg. So for this nest the female would have started sitting on the eggs when there were only 5. Sometimes this incubation method results in one chick being a day younger than the others because the last egg is laid one day after the others have started being incubated.
