The mother tree swallow flew off just as we approached her nest. So far, she has only just laid a few eggs, meaning her eggs are at the incubation stage.
After many attempts, we finally caught the male bird and banded him. The chicks have just hatched, and we'll be back to band them once they are old enough, and their legs are small enough to fit the band.
The little chicks are starting to grow feathers and fatten up with all of the bugs their parents are ferrying back to them. Hopefully they'll be the right size to band soon!
It's time for Box 104 to start fledging. In other words, the baby Tree Swallows have reached the stage in their cycle where they can begin to leave this nest. During this time we monitor the boxes until the box is completely empty, save for the chick's flattened grass and feather nest.
And that's a wrap! As of today, Box 104 has completely fledged, and the baby Tree Swallows are gone to prepare for their migration south this fall. We can no longer monitor these chicks anymore, so all that's left to do is clear out the nest at the end of the season to prepare for next year!
