Here are some ideas and examples to help train and support peer tutors.
Disability Awareness Workshop
Interactive stations and/or small group discussions focused on understanding differnt types of disabilities
Videos or guest speakers to share lived experiences
Person-first language scenarios and do/don't examples
Skill Modeling Practice
Peer tutors take turns demonstrating a skill to a partner
Include cues like "watch me", "try it with me", "let's do it together"
Practice giving one compliment and one helpful tip
Role-Playing Situations
"What would you do if..." scenarios (a peer doesn't want to participate, a peer needs help with skill, etc.)
Practice responding to different situations they may encounter
Practice encouraging phrases and positive redirection
Feedback Circle
Allow tutors to share what went well and what they found challenging
Discuss how they adapted or what they'd do differently
Training Checklist
Create a checklist for students to master peer tutoring skills (I can give a cue, I use respectful language, etc.)
Use it for students to complete training and have a level of understanding
