Fitness games are fun, movement-based activities and games designed to engage students in physical activity through play. These games combine exercise with elements of games, making fitness feel enjoyable and engaging for students. They can be adapted to meet students ability to participate.
Snake Pit
Students are in groups of 3-4 where they are split between 2 groups. On the go symbol (music, go, etc.) person 1 runs across the gym to give person 2 a high five. After a high five person 2 runs across the gym to person 3 and gives them a high five. After the high they run across the gym to give person 1 a high five. This continues until the stop signal (music stop, whistle, etc.), and the person who is in the snake pit (middle of the gym) from each team goes to the center of the gym. They complete certain exercises (use spinner, dice, or teacher/student pick). After they complete the exercises they return to the group and go again.
Demonstration found here.
Possible adaptions:
Have students run with a partner
Visuals of exercises to complete
Use a baton or other object for person running.
Use both visual and auditory signals for starting and stopping
4 - Corners
Students start by jogging laps around the gym. On a signal (music stop, whistle, voice command, etc.) students find a corner of the gym. A dice is rolled, and that corner is safe from during a certain exercise (dice, spinner, predetermined, etc.). If a 5 is rolled, only the teacher does the exercise, if a 6 is rolled everyone is safe from the exercise. The next round will start.
Possible adaptions:
Visuals (timers and for exercises)
Students walk/jog/run laps
Have corners clearly labeled
Use both visual and auditory signals
Fitness BINGO
This is a game that could be done in a few different ways. Simply, students are given a bingo card with various fitness tasks and complete them to get a bingo or other pattern determined.
Other ideas:
Group BINGO: Students are in a group and complete exercises to get a BINGO.
Relay BINGO: Students are in groups and take turns running to grab a card, complete the exercise and mark it on their BINGO card.
Station BINGO: The BINGO cards only have stations on them. Students have to travel to the station and complete task to cross it off.
Possible adaptions:
Visuals (timers and for exercises)
Students work in partners of groups
