WRITING A SCENE

You should begin with clearing your head and your expectations for yourself. The pressure to create something great can often be the obstacle that blocks creativity. Trust your instincts and stick to topics you know.

  1. Brainstorm your ideas. Make a list of your thoughts in categories you feel comfortable writing about. Do not bite off more than you can chew.

  2. Review your ideas and select the topic you plan to pursue.

  3. Write out or outline the larger story. Think about a theme or message you want to convey.

      1. Use your literary skills and develop a Beginning, Middle, End.

  4. Pick a moment in the story to focus on for your scene.

      1. Choose a moment that only has two-four characters. Know their relationship and history to each other.

      2. Figure out how the scene begins and now create a smaller story within the whole that has a beginning, middle, end.
