When your child begins at Hazlehead ELC, you will be invited to attend a Peep session alongside other families whose children are starting at the same time. This session includes a story, a song, and some activities, giving your child the opportunity to meet some of the staff and other children. While your child plays, you will have the chance to complete some paperwork. Following this, you will be shown around the nursery and the grounds.
Your child will then be invited to attend nursery for an hour, with you present. During this visit, you will sit with your child's keyworker to complete their care plan. On the next visit, your child will attend for one hour on their own. Finally, your child will attend for three hours independently. After this, they will officially start at Hazlehead ELC. If your child requires additional support to settle in, extra settling-in sessions can be arranged.
In the summer term before P1 starts, all pupils registered to start P1 at Hazlehead School are enrolled in a SeeSaw class. Through the class they will get a series of get-to-know-you activities to complete and submit on SeeSaw. Mrs Bruce visits all new P1s in their current ELC to get to know them and to find out how we can best support their transition into primary school. Familes are invited to an open morning at school where they will be invited on a tour of the school and where they can meet their new teacher. All information about transitioning into P1 is shared on a special transitions webiste which is shared with parents.
If a child starts at Hazlehead School from another school setting, they will be welcomed warmly by pupils and staff. Initially, having received a formal acceptance letter, the pupil and parent will be invited in for a tour of the school (this could happen prior to or on their first day). A school handbook and other relevant forms will be administered to parents, with information about uniform, photographic consent, school lunches etc. On the pupil's first day, they will be introduced to their class teacher who will identify some 'buddies' to help them settle in for the first week.
Pupils first begin their transition to secondary school in Primary 6, when they attend an ASG sports day with other schools in the local community. Once pupils begin Primary 7 they will be begin a planned progression of activities and experiences throughout the year that will help build their confidence and knowledge of secondary school. The following website provides an overview of what to expect during Primary 7.
