Hazlehead Ethos Block
As part of our curriculum design, we have a block of time assigned to ‘Life and Ethos of the School and Community’ during the school week.
The purpose of this block is to encourage pupils to contribute to the life and work of the school and, from the earliest stages, to exercise their responsibilities as members of the school community.
This includes opportunities to participate responsibly in decision making, to contribute as leaders and role models, to offer support and service to others and play an active part in putting the values of the school community in practice. It also allows our pupils to work across all year groups. Coverage of relevant Experiences and Outcomes can mainly be found in the Health and Wellbeing Planners.
This learning block takes place every Friday for approximately 45 minutes. On a rolling programme, pupils will participate in a variety of activities.
House Time
Every pupil is allocated a House on entry to the school with siblings in the same House. These Houses are named after local castles: Crathes, Drum, Fraser and Fyvie.
Working Groups
Pupils are given the opportunity to come together in small groups to develop an aspect of school life they would like to see improved. All pupils have been allocated to one of 5 working groups based on their classes. These are: Community, Health, Eco, Pupil Council and Global Partnerships. Together, pupils and staff develop a clear action plan for changes they would like to see within our school and wider community.
Masterclasses
This gives pupils the opportunity to participate in a range of activities offered by staff and sometimes parents to develop skills in areas that they are interested in thus encouraging personalisation and choice for all. Initially staff will offer a class on an area of their expertise for pupils to opt into. This will be across P1-3 and P4-7 year groups. The aim is to then respond to the pupils’ own choices as far as possible. Masterclasses will recommence soon.

House Time
Every pupil is allocated a House on entry to the school with siblings in the same House. These Houses are named after local castles: Crathes, Drum, Fraser and Fyvie. House Time gives each of the four Houses the opportunity to come together and participate in a variety of activities that will build the team ethos and allow a sense of togetherness. This will be led by House (P7) and Vice House (P6) Captains and supervised by teachers. House Captains will ensure that they liaise with their House Teachers throughout the year at appropriate times to ensure that everyone is clear on what is happening during planned activities. Houses meet at allocated times during each term.
