Description
Devotion to Our Lady of Providence originated in either in Italy or in Cataluña sometime in the XII century. In 1854, the Bishop Gill Esteve y Tomás introduced the devotion of Our Lady of Providence to Puerto Rico by gifting the Cathedral of San Juan an image of Our Lady that he commissioned in Barcelona. Placing the cathedral in the hands of Providence, the bishop also undertook to restore the structure that was in very bad conditions after years of neglect. In five years, the refurbishment was completed and the image of Our Lady was placed in the center of the nave.
Pope Paul VI declared Our Lady of Providence patroness of Puerto Rico on November 19, 1969. Interestingly, In the same decree he changed her original feast date on November 2, which marked the anniversary of the arrival of the image on the island, with the date of discovery of Puerto Rico, November 19. In 1990, a lot where a shrine to Our Lady will eventually stand was blessed, and a cross and a small plaza was built there in 2000. This project has also been placed in the hands of Providence, and the Puerto Rican people hope to eventually see that project realized.

Hail Mary
Amen.
