Description

This image of the Virgin is believed to be the first image of her to arrive in Guatemala. The sculptor Mosen Johan de Morgovejo originally chiseled the image in the late XV century. It is believed that it was brought to the Americas by the Spaniards sometime in the 1520s by the Spanish Conquistador, Pedro de Alvarado, who established the first city, Santiago.

According to legend, the arrival of the image brought rains that allowed for abundant crops and harvests.  She is therefore known as the patroness of Rains and Good Harvest in Guatemala as well.  In 1717, the country suffered a number of natural disasters, including earthquakes and volcanic explosions.  Our Lady was appealed to during this time and her cult became more widespread.  She was initially taken to the original Cathedral of Santiago de Guatemala and was removed from there to her own chapel in the new Cathedral in 1779, where she remains today.

Hail Mary

Amen.
