Learning Opportunities

In addition to the one on one teaching with staff on the wards and during clinical rotations, the following learning opportunities are the available:

ACADEMIC HALF DAY (MANDATORY)

Fridays from 0800-1200 in the 7-134 CSB Boardroom

• 0800h – 0900h CASE ROUNDS – a resident currently on the wards brings an interesting patient and presents the history. A resident, generally R3-R5 (R2s later in the year) is chosen to examine the patient and summarize the case. Afterwards the localization and etiology is discussed. Once per month rounds are replaced by either EEG sessions, Neuroradiology sessions or Quality Care Rounds
• 0900h – 1000h GRAND ROUNDS
• 1000h – 1200h TEACHING SESSIONS – Currently, there is a two year rotating curriculum organized into neurologic subspecialties and based on the Royal College requirements for training in neurology. These sessions range from didactic lectures to workshops. Both residents and staff present at these rounds.

Academic Half Days are protected time for you, so please sign out via locating to another resident or your staff person on these days. As a courtesy, please remind staff of your absence on Friday mornings. If you have trouble getting to half-day on time due to clinical commitments, please make the Chief Resident or the Program Coordinator aware so that this can be rectified.

• Grand Rounds: Fridays 0900h – 1000h, Classroom D UAH
• EEG Rounds: Thursdays 0900h – 1000h 1J2.13 UAH
• Seizure Conference: Fridays 1200h – 1300h 4H2.01 UAH
• Stroke Rounds: Wednesdays 1200h – 1300h Classroom A UAH
• Unusual Movement Disorder Rounds: Last Friday of the Month 1200h – 1300h 7-134 CSB
• Neurointerventional Rounds: Wednesday 0700h – 0800h Hepburn Library UAH
• Neuroinflammatory Rounds: Monthly, variable location
• Neuromuscular Rounds: Monthly, variable location

INTAKE ROUNDS

Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday from 0800-0900 in the 7-134 Clinical Sciences Building Boardroom

They are designed for the residents on call the night prior to give handover to the teams. Informal teaching is also incorporated into these rounds. All residents are welcome!

JOURNAL CLUB

Journal club occurs monthly, and is based on the current subspecialty being covered in half day that month.

All R1s – R4s will be expected to present at least one paper yearly. Residents will be paired with an appropriate staff member to assist in paper analysis and organization.
