Beginning a new school year is a stressful time - for children, parents, and even teachers. For many of us, returning to school may increase our anxiety and stress levels. The basics of coping with anxiety in returning to school include: getting children back into their routines for sleep schedules, discussing the positives of schools such as seeing their friends or making new friends, and emphasizing the joys of learning. It is important to preview for children what some of the changes in school will be, and how they can prepare for these changes before they begin school. The intention in this is to give them a sense of control about how they can use their own coping skills and reminding them there are always adults at school to help and guide them.
