Chores and Routines

Family routines are so important to child development. They organize the family to get things done and map out how family time is spent and enjoyed. It also lets each family member know who is responsible for what tasks, when and how often they need to do them, and the order in which tasks need to be done. Routines make your home more consistent and that predictability makes children feel safe.

Together, routines and chores strengthen family relationships and make each person feel like a contributing part of the family. Chores teach children responsibility, skills, how to be independent and even build their executive functioning abilities. Routines help children to learn healthy habits and feel less anxious.

For parents, setting up family routines also lowers stress and helps the family get through their day in an organized way. It frees up parents’ time and helps children stay regulated by knowing what comes next and what they need to do.
