Dictation
Dictation used to be viewed as being a little bit old fashioned but it can be a worthwhile exercise as you practise listening, writing and reading.
Each of the listening exercise presented here includes a sound file, transcript and translation. If you do these kinds of exercises regularly, your listening comprehension will improve.
Here is a study guide to make the most of the sound files:
Step 1- Listen and write (the most challenging)
Start the sound file and reconstruct the passage sentence by sentence on refill paper.
Replay parts of the sentence as many times as it takes.
Step 2- Read
Open up the transcript to compare with your version.
Mark your sentences using the transcript.
Skim your corrected version for new words/structures.
Research the meaning of those to build up your personal vocabulary
Step 3- Listen and read (this will help to make the connection between what you are hearing and how it is spelt)
Start the sound file so that you can follow the script as you listen. Just keep listening and checking the transcript as many times as it takes until finally you can understand the sound file without looking at the transcript.
