Sam drove 10 357 kms in May and 124 056 kms on Friday. How far did he travel altogether?
2. Solve by using rounding and compensation Card 5 (making tidy numbers.)
Joe’s class has collected 22 997 insects stickers so far. Tama’s class has collected 1726
How many have they collected altogether?
3. Solve by using reversibility. Card 15 (changing into an addition problem) then jump the number line.
There were 1732 people in the in the stadium. After lunch 845 left. How many people were left?
4. Solve by using rounding and compensation. Card 8.
There are 2 632 seats in the hall for the concert. 497 seats have been sold. How many seats are left?
5. Solve by using place value partitioning - (multiply by the tens then the ones) Or rounding and compensating
The PIzza Shop made 29 pizzas. If each pizza was cut into 8 slices. How many slices did they make altogether?
6. Solve by using place value partitioning (use your basic facts of the 8 times tables).
If they made 264 slices how many pizzas did they make?
7. Solve 2 ways. First by rounding and compensating then by equal additions
The distance to the city was 16.3 km. If Sam had driven 3.9 km how far did he have to go?
8. Solve by reversability then jump the numberline.
I had a piece of wood that was 834.31 cm long. I had to cut off a piece of wood 78.68 cm long. What length of wood do I have left.
9. Draw a grid to help you solve this multiplication problem.
a)The farmer had a field 24 m by 18 m. What is the total area of the field?
b)If he fenced the perimeter how much fencing does he need?
10. Fractions
I have 12 lollies. I have 2/3 of what Teri has. Together we have 1/5 of the lollies in our group. How many lollies does Teri have and how many does our group have?
11. Proportions and Ratios
A recipe says 24 biscuits you need 250 grams of butter and 60 g of sugar? How much butter and sugar do you need if you want to make 36 bisciuts? What about 56?
Use these strategies
Making tidy numbers.
Reversability and Jumping the numberline.
1. 3.9 + 2.4
2. 0.6 + 1.7
3. 2.9 + 1.9
4. 10.4 + 10.9
5. 2.6 + 1.6
6. 5.8 + 0.8
7. 4.6 – 1.7
8. 3.6 – 2.9
9. 7.2 – 3.5
10. 15.8 – 8.9
11. 3.3 – 1.6
12. 2.3 – 1.8
Bronnie and Simon are organising drinks and packets of chips for the school disco. They want to estimate how many of each they will need.
They have the following information:
There are 11 classes coming to the disco.
Each class has about 27 students.
Usually about 75% of the students come.
There are 20 packets of chips in a box.
Each person will be given 1 packet of chips and 1 cup of juice.
1. Bronnie and Simon have 1 L bottles of juice. They want to fill cups that hold 125 mL. How many cups can they pour from 1 bottle of juice?
2. They don’t want to have lots of juice and chips left over. How many bottles of juice and boxes of chips should they buy? Bronnie and Simon are organising drinks and packets of chips for the school disco. They want to estimate how many of each they will need.
1. It’s 7km from Tim’s house to where his Grandma lives. It’s uphll on the way there so he can only cycle at 14kph but he can do 21kph on the way back.
Tim leaves his house at 6pm. How long can he stop at his Grandma’s house if he wants to be back home for his favourite TV programme at 7pm?
If he wants to stay at his Grandmother's for 1/2 hour, what time will he have to leave home?
2. Gulls
It has been raining. In the paddock near the school 273 worms have come to the surface. As you can imagine, the seagulls have started to hover overhead.
(a) Now gulls are satisfied if they can eat 11 worms in one sitting. How many gulls can be satisfied by the worms in the paddock?
(b) Actually gulls can drum up worms by running on the spot. Have you seen them doing that? A flock of 34 gulls lands in the paddock with 273 worms. How many worms will they have to drum up so that they are all satisfied?
(c) In another paddock there are 359 worms. After another flock lands there and has drummed up enough worms, each gull can be satisfied. Whats more, the leader of the flock manages to get two extra worms. How many gulls were there in this flock?
3. The Rock Pool
Some octopuses, some fish and a few mermaids were happily frolicking in a rock pool. Altogether there were 38 arms, 24 eyes
and 8 tails all swimming in the pool. How many mermaids were there?
