Digital Learning Protocols

Technical details at Pt England School:

  1. Teachers need to be able to observe classroom computer use from a variety of teaching stations.

    • Teachers need to arrange suitable tables for computer stations in the classroom, including space for mouse & keyboard, particularly in the Junior school.

    • Screens must be visible, facing out into the classroom.

    • Teachers are responsible for internet useage which occurs under their personal login and their your classroom login.

    • Teachers will email the technicians (Paulitia and Toreka) to log computer, laptop and software issues needing repairs

  2. Teacher laptops

    • Teachers are able to administer their own laptops and the teacher login on classroom computers also permits you as an administrator. This allows you to change annoying, minor features such as incorrect date & time. eMail Kent if you require additional software on your classroom computers

    • Given this freedom we accept no responsibility for issues you create and although we will endeavour to repair resulting problems, we will not put a lot of time into it.

    • Laptops are primarily provided for use at school, therefore should be at school every day. Teachers are the only persons who should be logged on under the name (Teacher). The teacher is responsible for the security of the password.

  3. Children MUST be supervised using the internet at all times.

    • Our Cyber Smart policy will guide student online activity.

    • We do not expect our students to use artwork or music off the internet unless there is a clearly defined and approved education purpose for this.

  4. Staff must ensure that they do not use the internet or email in any way which could bring us into disrepute (see below).

    • Make sure you are familiar with the PES internet and Cyber Smart policy and that it is a integral part of daily life in your classroom

    • Do not let visitors, family members etc ‘just hop on a computer to check my email’ , particularly on weekends and after hours. You are responsible for internet useage which occurs under your personal login and your classroom login.

    • You must have permission from any staff member photographed or videoed before making their image public or transporting it digitally outside the school. Particularly remember this when entering competitions and other events outside our school community.

  5. If you wish to video conference out of the school using iChat, Skype, Google Hangout or the MOE bridge, please check with the Digital Learning Team first. This is to be seen as the same as an EOTC experience.

  6. Social Networking/Web 2.0

  7. The Web 2 environment offers many opportunities to learning and teaching at Pt England School. We intend to continue getting the most out of the positive aspects and to exercise caution in the areas where we observe little education benefit, where our students are clearly under the legal age of participation or which may compromise student safety.

  8. The bottom line in all that we do at Pt England School is what is best for the children. In view of this, we explore Web 2 environments which will enhance learning and teaching and foster our eLearning goals of personal voice, authentic audience and students as creators of content rather than consumers. Many Web 2 environments also promote the goals of our Manaiakalani work around using eLearning to improve student literacy outcomes.

    • Pt England teachers do NOT 'friend' students who are illegally using a social networking site eg FaceBook

    • Teachers are NOT friends with Pt England kids on FaceBook or other sites they are using under age

    • We all need to think very seriously about 'friending' immediate past pupils.

  9. The following protocols are in place:

    • A formal class lesson needs to precede the introduction of any new Web 2 environment the students are going to work in. This would include such Cyber Smart issues as; safety, protocols and netiquette & the permanence of web postings

    • The teacher is ultimately responsible for all content/comments published by students in their classroom on the internet

    • As professionals we are personally responsible for any other content referring to Pt England School that we post online, in any forum. This includes clear separation between student and teacher content in online spaces. And clear separation between adult personal and adult professional (school related) online interactions.

    • ALL images and video relating to Pt England School must be authorised by the teacher managing that particular web environment

    • Teachers in consultation with their team leaders will develop protocols to ensure children's published content reflects our dedication to quality. This includes establishing appropriate protocols for children posting written content and comments. These protocols will be displayed in the class computer area. This does NOT mean we are asking for perfection before we publish. There is a clear understanding that our students are on a learning journey and whilst we expect to see improvement over a year, we do not want to wait for perfection before our children get to share their outcomes.

    • Our focus on improving student literacy outcomes extends to online writing eg standard English, appropriate spelling etc.

    • Teachers wishing to create a NEW Web 2 environment (eg a photo sharing site) associated with Pt England School need to:

      • Discuss it first with Team leader and ensure you set it up along the PES guidelines

      • Make sure the login and passwords are recorded on the Google Form

      • Use the standard Pt England naming and tagging system - check with Dorothy if unsure

      • Links will be added to it from the Pt England website

    • Teachers must use RSS in conjunction with their Web 2 environment to ensure that the site is checked on daily as content/comments are added. An RSS feeder is highly recommended

    • Some social networking sites will continue to be fire-walled (blocked) at PES. eg FaceBook

    • Video content is only to be posted online on iTunes, Management approved Youtube Channels, Google Videos, Vimeo, Flickr, the school website and class blogs. Other sites would need approval from Russell.
