Literacy Cycle

The concept of the Literacy Cycle was developed at Pt England School in 2007 out of the work the Year 5/6 classes were doing at the time.

The seven schools in the Manaiakalani Cluster have since adopted it and the impact of the Literacy Cycle has been researched over three years.

The concluding statement in the research around "what works" in our classes is:

    • Use of a Literacy Cycle with explicit teaching of each stage. Continued reflection and revision of cycle to meet the needs of the teaching and learning.

    • The Literacy Cycle encourages independence and self management.

    • The Literacy Cycle needs to be used throughout the school to ensure continuity for students.

Schools around the country and internationally are beginning to use the model, as the simplicity of it to enable a genuine 21st century learning environment is begining to be understood.
