High School Specialty Programs:

Out of all the high school specialty programs, there is one that I found to be especially unique. The Aerospace Engineering and Aviation Technology program at Duval high school. I had gotten the opportunity to go on a recent trip to this school. During my time there I was able to get immersed in most of what the program had to offer. To start off, one feature that stood out to me and I think will also stand out to many others is the program having their own section in the school. This feature also came with an even better one, the students in the program have restrooms in the sections that they can use instead of the regular school ones (the program's restrooms are way cleaner).

The first aspect of the program we explored was aerospace engineering.  I had the pleasure of being able to sit in on one of the engineering lessons, I got to see a hands on assignment that the students did and why they did it. I even got to see two robots, one was named after its amount of legs and also its shape (hexagonal) and the other seemed to be a drone. It was extremely cool to be able to see the (hexagonal) robot move and dance on its own through coding and engineering.

The aviation part of the program is what really got my attention though. The students were able to use flight simulators and fly drones, which allows them to gain more hands on experience. They also had the opportunity to make their own air balloons and test kites for NASA. It seems that most of the work in the program is hands on, where you can create things, test them and then revise them. I was also told that field trips were a common thing within the program, of course field trips relating to the program.

Another thing I enjoyed about the program was just the overall energy. The students were very enthusiastic and kept talking about how much they loved the program. A student in the program also kept trying to convince the students to join the program through a chant. The staff members there were kind, helpful and extremely passionate about what they do. These are just my thoughts, many students in the program were mentioning how kind and understanding the teachers were.

If you had not gotten to submit an application for the AEAT program there is no need to worry. This program (thankfully) does not require any application for current 8th graders of pgcps. This is because you are automatically considered for the program once you have taken the PSAT.  So, there's no need to worry and you can rest assured!

Meet Our New Assistant Principal: Andrea Salem Larson

Andrea would love to change the way she interacts with people but what angers her the most is when people's choices put them in harm's way. What motivates her in her job is the benefits of her work. Her favorite thing about her job is to improve kid's life and their families. Her greatest achievement is being a mother of a son. Favorite book: Anything from Ogmandino. What makes her laugh the most are vines or funny videos. Andrea used to attend Gorge Mason University and she is attending NDMU. Andrea is from the Philippines NOT ASIA! Andrea is the Assistant principal so she tries her best to lead people to the right learning and life skills. Andrea loves to take naps and relax. Andrea's favorite sport is street hockey. Andrea's nickname is A.J. and she likes surprises that are POSITIVE. Andrea's favorite Era in history is the Enlightenment Era in the 1800s. Andrea's friend describes her as positive and supportive.  Andrea's favorite hobbies are reading and relaxing. If Andrea could pick any superpower it would be time travel but she wouldn't want to change anything in the past or the future, would just let history unfold. Andrea's favorite holiday is Thanksgiving and her favorite movie is Legend. Andrea's favorite subject is Science.

When will it happen...

Do you ever wonder why things happen to you? Your community? The crazy world we live in? Do you ever question why we are defined by our gender and/or race? Do you wonder why people are judged by their appearance, race/ethnicity, religion, or political views instead of their character? Why do these elements determine a person’s identity alone? Do you ever fear for your safety because of the abysmal events occurring in our communities? Do you speak up when laws are made that affect the safety and progress of your community by government officials? Do you ever wonder why it's okay for society to ignore the importance of people's lives that are taken away for no reason other than hatred and ignorance? Which lives "really" matter? The unborn? The little children? The elderly? The Christians? Which gender(s)? Which race? What/Who determines equality? What is equal? We need to stop ignoring the atrocities that are going on in our communities and around the world and start fixing the violence that is increasing every day.  There are a lot of things in this world we should question.  When will people realize the blessing of living before it’s taken from them? Severe cases of trauma and desire to keep evil alive are growing in abundance. When is the hatred going to stop? Nobody should have to endure the trauma that my generation is seeing. We should not be judged by anything but the “content of our character” (Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.) I feel that the amount of work that is put in by some to ensure the safety of their community is just not enough. Safe systems, security guards, video cameras,  and programs for the youth are not enough to make everyone feel safe and welcomed and cared about by this union. Nobody should be classified or judged as anything but a human being. We as humans shouldn't have to feel anything but joy and freedom. Any pain we face should be temporary. Unfortunately, this goal can not be achieved as long as people continue to stay blinded by inimical and prejudicial ideologies that cause people to feel the need to commit atrocities to the innocent.. In the world today there's a lot of adversity, inhumanity and very challenging circumstances  that we cannot handle or conquer. Our support systems in schools, non-profit organizations, marches/campaigns are just not enough simply because some people are stubborn, ignorant, and scared of the judgment of others  and the unknown/foreign.  In some cases today, there is not a strong enough or loud enough voice to be powerful enough to make these instances stop. How do we make it stop? Why can’t we make it stop? I believe the two main reasons are ignorance and fear.   When are we going to stop feeding into fear and feed into bravery and boldness? There are too many suicides and murders taking place just to sit around. People, government, and law enforcement need to stop playing superhero and cop when what we truly need to do is take action! We need to feel that those that are there to protect us are truly there to protect ALL of us. People need to stop the pettiness and stop holding grudges and believing everything on the internet. We need to make it stop in schools, communities, clubs, on social media. When will we listen to one another and see each other for what we can bring to the world and not judge by anything but a person’s character? When will it happen?

Team Seas

Popular YouTubers are using their platforms to get donations to Team Seas. Team Seas is a campaign that is taking donations. They are trying to raise 30 million dollars to take 30 million pounds of trash out of the ocean. This campaign was started by YouTubers, Mr. Beast, and Mark Rober to raise awareness about how much trash is in the ocean and the little things we can do to help it get out of the ocean. They say that there are estimated to be 200 million pounds of plastic in the sea due to pollution. Soon our earth will go through a crisis if no one stands up to fix this situation.

This campaign is a follow-up to a previously very successful campaign, Team Trees, that raised 20 million dollars before 2020. If people donate just $1 to the campaign then 1 pound of trash will be removed from the ocean. Many YouTubers are helping by spreading awareness on their platforms. Team Seas is working with The Ocean Cleanup using trash collecting technology. They are trying to raise 30 million dollars by the end of the year and are asking many YouTubers with a large following to help support by uploading a video on the topic. They are also asking everyone to donate what they can. If you cannot donate, then please spread awareness about Team Seas with others. Everything that happens in the ocean affects all of us.
