President Dwight D. Eisenhower was raised by his parents who were devout Jehovah’s Witnesses, a form of Christianity. His parents held regular weekly “prayer meetings” in their home. This religion does not observe or celebrate Christmas or personal birthdays. The only day/evening that is celebrated is Good Friday, the day Jesus Christ was crucified. Ike and his brothers hid their religious upbringing from journalists, reporters, etc. All of them left this faith by their early twenties. One week after Eisenhower became President, he was baptized and joined the local Presbyterian Church. He encouraged Congress to add “under God” to the Pledge of Allegiance in 1954.
