HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Dear parents,

We hope you and your family are keeping well and have had a restful break.  As we move towards remote learning, we will be doing our best to keep routines as consistent with the classroom as possible.  As this is the third time doing online classes, the transition should be a smooth one.  We will be following the regular school day schedule, beginning classes, breaking for lunch and recesses, and ending classes at the same times each day.  Please note that first and third recesses will be extended to 25 minutes to allow time for students to get outside and have a break from the computer screen.  Recess times will be 10:25 - 10:50 in the morning and 2:10 - 2:35 in the afternoon.

Daily classes will be composed of synchronous and asynchronous learning.  During synchronous learning, the teacher will be leading the class or the students will be in break-out rooms for small group activities.  Students will be asked to participate in discussions as they would in the classroom.  During asynchronous times, students will be assigned tasks to work on independently.  Each 75 minute block will be split into 45 minutes of synchronous instruction and 30 minutes of asynchronous.

9:15 - 10:25 - Language with Mr. Wakefield

10:25 - 10:50 - Snack and Recess

10:50 - 12:00 - Math with Mr. Wakefield

12:00 - 1:00 - Lunch and Recess

1:00 - 1:45 - French with Mme Samson

1:45 - 2:10 (Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays) - Physical education with Mr. Wakefield or Mme Samson (on Fridays)

2:10 - 2:35 - Snacks and Recess

2:35 - 3:45 - French / Science / Drama with Mme Samson

After the break, subject themes will be as follows:

English: Narrative reading (summarizing and reporting), creative writing, media studies (poster and video design and production), and oral presentations

Math: Perimeter and area, *multiples and factors, and *fractions

Religion: Showing God’s love through acts of kindness

Science: Electricity (static and current electricity)

French and Drama: Narrative reading (dialogue and skit texts), writing and oral presentations

* Quick and easy recall of times-tables is very important for this unit.

As always, we appreciate your continued support.  Please feel free to contact us through phone or email us if you have any questions.

Best regards,

The Grade 6 Team

Advent Has Arrived

The students will be doing two Advent Projects this year.  The first project will be to lead the school's Advent Liturgies.  The liturgies will be recorded in our new Learning Commons Recording Studio and played by the teachers for their classes.  Each student will be doing a reading and participating in the singing of Light the Advent Candle.

The second project is more of an individual project for the students.  After Kindness Week last week, the class has been inspired to try to make the world a better place through acts of kindness.  As a result, each student will be seeking opportunities to be kind to others and recording their actions in a Google Advent Calendar.  A random act of kindness per day is the goal.

In Math, the students finished their unit tests for our unit on place value last week.  As a result, we will be moving to measurement.  The class will begin by learning more about the metric system, linear measurement, and converting units.  After that, we will learn about the area and perimeter of various polygons, including triangles.

Class Update - Friday, November 12, 2021

Remembrance Day

The students worked collaboratively on a Remembrance Day magazine this week.  After class discussions and poetry readings, each student wrote a poem and designed their own page of the magazine.  The pages included pictures and their personal poems.

In English, the class continues to read our novel study, Time for Andrew.  It is an amazing story that the students are sure to enjoy.  Ask your child to share chapter summaries with you so you can keep up with the plot of the novel.

The students have also been practising their creative writing skills.  Over the last few weeks, they have completed various activities aimed at adding dialogue into stories properly.  This week, they used the author of Time for Andrew, Mary Downing Hahn, as motivation to write descriptions of their rooms.  Ask your child to share theirs with you.  It should be in their English Binder.

In Math, the students have moved from place value of whole numbers to decimals.  They will be learning to represent, expand, compare, order and round decimal numbers to 0.009.  In addition, the class will continue to work on times-tables and long division.

Class Update - Thursday, October 21, 2021

Bon Voyage to the Voyage of the Mimi

The students read and viewed the final episode of the Second Voyage of the Mimi this week.  Ask your child to explain the ending to you.  Next week in English, the class will be doing Halloween activities.  The students will be writing stories, reading poems, researching popular Halloween characters and composing Halloween songs throughout the week.

In Math, the class started place value this week.  Over the next few weeks, we will be working with very large and very small numbers.  The students will be representing, expanding, rounding and comparing numbers from 1 000 000 to 0.001.   In addition to place value, the class is learning long division and continuing to practise their times-tables.

Just a reminder that the students have homework almost every school day.  Homework consists of unfinished activities from Math and English and should not take longer than 30 minutes.  It is recorded in their agendas each morning and the handouts are stored in the 'Homework' section of their binders.  If your child does not do their homework, they will need to get an incomplete homework stamp signed that night.  If your child is regularly spending more than 20 to 30 minutes of homework each night, please contact me so we can discuss homework strategies to lighten the load.

  Class Update - Friday, October 15, 2021

Wouldn't you know it, we had another BUSY week in Grade 6.  I am sensing this is going to be a regular occurance in room #132.  Today was an agenda checking day.  The students have been using small notebooks to record daily assignments and notes.  The agenda is kept in their homework binders.  If your child does not complete their homework, they receive a stamp to be signed by you.  Some of the students need to get past unsigned stamps signed this weekend.

In English this week, the students worked through episodes #10 and 11 of the Second Voyage.  The plot has gotten very interesting as the crew searches for the lost city in the Yucatan peninsula.  Ask your child to go over the twists and turns and make sure they explain about Harvey Westerman.

The class continues to use the adventures of CT and his friends to practise their writing.  The students have been answering questions using the three sentence format.  They are encouraged to ensure their answers contain detailed and specific sentences.  In addition, they are striving to include descriptive adjectives and phrases in their journals.

Data Management was concluded this week with scatter plot graphs.  We are doing a review activity today and the unit test will be on Monday.  Our next unit in Math will be on place value.  The students will be working with numbers between 0.001 and 999 999 999.

Please note that the class is also working on learning their times-tables to 12.  Each week, we have practised one digit.  Thus far, we have done the 2's, 3's, 4's and 9's times-tables.  Next week, we will work on the 6's.

While all of this is going on, we have also found time to work on 2 digit by 2 digit multiplication and will be starting 2 digit by 1 digit long division next week.

As always, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me by phone (613-824-8541) or email (christopher.wakefield@ocsb.ca).

  Class Update - Thursday, October 7, 2021

Student's Game

It has been a BUSY week in Grade 6.  We have had a number of extra activities this week.

On Tuesday, we participated in the Divine Infant Thanksgiving Mass.  During the second block, the class followed an online coding course.  The students learned how to animate and change the Google logo.  Ask your child to show you their project.

Thursday was the Terry Fox Run.  Thanks to all of the families for donating to the fund.  As a class, we ran/walked a 400 metre loop for 30  minutes.  Our class goal was to log enough kilometres to get us to Brockville.  We set Kingston as our ultimate goal.  Calculations will be done on Tuesday, so be sure to ask your child how we did.

In class, we continued to work on data management in Math.  We learned how to make line plots for single sets of data (whether it is pronounced data or datta erupted into a class discussion) and use the graphs to calculate the mean, median and mode of the set of numbers.

In English, the students followed CT's journal writing example and wrote a journal of a memorable event every day this week.  Your child's journals are in their English Binder, in case you want to read them this weekend.

I returned the triple line graphs on Friday.  Please sign your child's graph this weekend.

Class Update - Friday, October 1, 2021

It is hard to believe that the first month of school is already over.  Things are going very well in the classroom.  All of the students are settling well into the school routine.  Homework is something that we often discuss and is part of your child's school experience.  It is important that routines are established in grade 6 before the students transition to St. Matts.  The students should be using their binders properly.  There are three sections entitled Homework, Math and English.  Whenever your child has homework, they should store it in the Homework section of the binder.  In addition, daily activities should be recorded in your child's agenda every day.  If for some reason your child does not complete their homework, they will receive a 'Incomplete Homework' stamp for a parent to sign.  Please note that if your child does not complete their homework due to a particularly busy evening, you are encouraged to write a note in their child's agenda.

Today was a fun day in class.  We got our school photos taken, watched two episodes of the Voyage of the Mimi, discussed stressful things in our lives and learned that when we feel nervous or anxious, Paul McCartney's mother encourages us to let it be.

Class Update - Wednesday, September 29, 2021

The class continued to focus on journal writing in English class.  Yesterday, the students wrote journals about an unexpected activity and today, they wrote about a lost, damaged or destroyed possession.  They are working hard to follow the format and seem to be doing well.  Ask your child to see their online journals.

In Math, the class began individual triple or quadruple line graphs based on the same data they used to make their bar graphs.  Later this week and next, we will learn about line plot and scatter plot graphs.  Individual line graphs are due on Thursday.

Class Update - Monday, September 27, 2021

The class began their week reviewing how to answer questions properly.  Many answers needed to be amended in order to ensure they were THREE sentences long.  After that, we looked at proper journal writing format.  The students will be learning how to effectively relate to the Voyage of the Mimi through the journals this week.  They will be expected to do a journal each week based on one of the events of the story.  Please see the following link for an outline for journal writing and a few samples:

Journal Writing Format and Samples

In Math, the students continued to work on graphing.  With partners, they made a double line graph based on favourite numbers of grades 5 and 6 students.  Later this week, they will be given a second individual graphing project to produce a triple line graph based on the data they collected for their bar graphs.

Class Update - Thursday, September 23, 2021

In the past few days, we have focussed our attention on the proper answer format and reading episodes 4 and 5 of the Second Voyage of the Mimi.  The story is beginning to get interesting as the crew has found a passage through the reef and an old Mayan stela under the water..

In Spelling this week, we learned about silent consonants.  The class learned that there were only two people in class with silent consonants in their names.

Finally in Math, the students turned in their triple bar graph projects this morning.  We also continued to work on graphing.  The students are moving from bar graphs to line graphs.  Today, we worked on organizing a set of numbers into groups in order to graph them more effectively.

Today in Class - Mon, September 20, 2021

In English, we filled out our Term 1 Goal Sheets.  The students have looked at their strengths and weaknesses and set objectives to achieve or work towards during term 1.  Please have a look at your child's sheet and sign it tonight,

We did not have time to work on episodes 2 and 3 of the Second Voyage of the Mimi, but will work on it tomorrow.  In particular, we will practise answering the questions using the proper answer format (see sample from the first voyage below).  The students will continue to work with this mini-paragraph format to answer all questions in class.

Graphing was the activity of the day in Math.  Students finished their partner double bar graphs and began to work on their individual triple bar graphs.  Hopefully your child remembered to survey your opinions on my favourite things in order to obtain the data for the project.  Individual bar graphs are due on Wednesday.

All of the students now have access to a device in class.  If your child has decided to bring in their own personal devices, it is important that they are brought fully charged everyday.  There is a spot in class for your child to store their computer.  In addition, if your child would like to store it permanently at school, they should bring in their power cord and we will add it to their storage space.

On Board for ‘The Voyage of the Mimi’

The Grade 5/6 and 6 classes will begin the year with the award winning series 'The Voyage of the Mimi'.  This is a language based program consisting of thirteen chapters in a continuing drama/adventure. The dramatic/adventure story is about life aboard the Mimi with Captain Granville and his grandson C.T., played by a young Ben Affleck.  In this series, the two Granvilles and a team of scientists, sail to Georges Bank to complete a census on humpback whales.

The study guide contains illustrated versions of the television segments adapted to a print format.  The students will read the chapters and complete related activities during the week. On Fridays, the class will watch the video episodes based on their readings.  Click on the link below to see a young Ben Affleck describe the series:

Voyage of the Mimi Sneak Preview

Some of the Language Skills that will be covered include:

- Reading expository and narrative material independently and in groups

- Organizing information to convey a central idea, using paragraphs

- Revising and editing work in collaboration with others

- Using and spelling correctly the vocabulary for grade 6

- Proofreading and correcting final drafts

- Using different styles of writing to relay messages

(e.g. - narrative, persuasive, expository)

Mathematics

The students will begin the year by reviewing methods of tallying data and presenting it on bar graphs.  The students will have a great time learning more about their peers as they poll each other for favourites in various categories.  Group and individual activities will be the focus, as students construct single and multi-bar graphs.

The class will also be working with place value this month.  The students will be reading, writing, ordering, comparing and finding the mean, median and mode of numbers from 0.001 to 1 million.

In class, we will also discuss the importance of memorizing multiplication, addition, subtraction and division facts.  Quick and easy recall of these facts will greatly assist your child in reaching his/her full potential in the grade 6 math program.  Although drill is part of each school day, it is imperative that your child continue to practise the skills at home until they are mastered.

Religion

Our religion program focuses on the relationship each child has with God.  The students will start the program by examining themselves and the gifts that have been given to them by God.  They are also introduced to the responsibility of their gifts, to share them with others and use them to help to make the world a better place.

Supplies

The following is a list of supplies that would be helpful for your child to have in his/her homeroom class.

Please note that there are extra materials available for students to share if they do not have them (except shoes, of course).

Class Yearbook

Together, we are going to create a virtual Class of 2020 yearbook for you to keep as a reminder of your final year at Convent Glen Catholic School.

Please follow the steps below and as always, email me if you have any questions.

* You are going to use the skills that you acquired completing your magazine project to construct and design TWO amazing pages all about you.

* A Google Slideshow has been shared for you in your Language Folder.

* Please remember to ONLY work on your own slides.

* Unlike the Farewell Celebration slide, this page is all yours to design within the framework outlined below.

* Note that I have added your name to your two slides using Word Art.

Slide 1 - All About ME

* Choose a background.  Make sure that it is subtle and does not overpower the words or photos on the page.

* Your FIRST name should be prominent.  Use the WORD ART functions to make your name FANCY.

* Add facts about you.  Things like your birthday, your family, favourite things, sports, hobbies, etc. (See 'Note' below)

* Add a photo or two of you.  At least one photo should be a photo from this year which clearly shows your face.  You can choose one from your files or copy and paste your grad photo. The second photo can be one from your childhood or a picture of you doing something you love to do.

* Adjust the fonts and photo sizes.  Make sure that you fill up the page.

Hint: You can use a lot of the information from your 'All About Me' slide in your Magazine Project.

Slide #2 - Who I Am

* Use the same background as your first slide.

* Slide #2 should be set up similarly to the silhouettes that sixth grade students have done in previous years.

* Insert words, pictures, photos, logos, anything that describes YOU!

* Again, use the WORD ART functions to make your name, words and phrases FANCY.

* Adjust the fonts and photo sizes.  Make sure that you fill up the page.

****Please be finished designing your page by JUNE 23 at 4 pm.****

Final Math Questions of the Day

(Answers will be posted on the next school day)

1) The first term of a pattern is 28 672.

The pattern rule is “divide by 4 to get the next term.”

What is the 5th term?

● 28         ● 112         ● 448         ● 7168

2) Isla can run 800 metres in 10 minutes. At this rate, how many kilometres can she run in 50 minutes?

● 4         ● 16         ● 4000         ● 8000

3)

4)

5)

Wednesday's Answers

1)

16 / 4 = 4 and 16 - 12 = 4

So, b must be 16

2)

65 - 28 = 37, so there are 37 students in grade 6 and 65 in total.

37 / 65 = 0.57 or 57%

3)

Volume Figure #1 - 8 x 20 x 10 = 1600 cm^2

Volume Figure #2 - 4 x 10 x 5 = 200 cm^2

200 x 8 = 1600, so Figure 1 has eight times the volume of Figure 2.

4)

Pattern is doubling: 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64

Tuesday's Answers

1) Which number is a prime number and a factor of both 66 and 72?

● 3         ● 6         ● 9         ● 11

The only prime numbers are 3 and 11.

11 does not go into 72

3 goes into 66 and 72

(Remember the trick? 6 + 6 = 12 and 7 + 2 = 9.  3 goes into both 12 and 9, so we know that 3 also goes into 66 and 72.)

2) What is the mean of these 7 numbers? 4, 8, 2, 10, 3, 2, 6

● 2         ● 4         ● 5         ● 8

4 + 8 + 2 + 10 + 3 + 2 + 6 = 35 / 7 = 5

5 is the mean.

3)

Area of front = 10 x 6 = 60 cm^2

Area of back = 10 x 6 = 60 cm^2

Area of side #1 = 4 x 6 = 24 cm^2

Area of side #2 = 4 x 6 = 24 cm^2

Area of bottom = 10 x 4 = 40 cm^2

Total surface area = 60 + 60 + 24 + 24 + 40 = 208 cm^2

4)

The correct answer is a rotation of 180 degrees about point P, then a translation 2 units to the right.

Monday's Answers

1) Which decimal number is equivalent to 2/5?

● 0.25         ● 0.40         ● 2.5         ● 5.2

2/5 = 0.40

2) A bean plant grows 0.7 cm each day. Which length is the closest to the total growth of the plant in one month?

● 28 cm         ● 21 cm         ● 4.9 cm         ● 2.8 cm

0.7 cm x 30 days = 21 cm

3)

27 C - 18 C = 9 C

4)

18 cm x 12 cm / 2 = 108 cm^2

Friday's Answers

1)

Parallelogram - 0

Rectangle - 2

Triangle - 3

Pentagon - 5

The correct answer is b.

2)

There are 32 red paper clips and 96 total clips in the box.

The probability of choosing a red one is 32/96 or 1/3 or 33%

3)

? / 58 = 30

To find ?, you can reverse the order of the function:

30 x 58 = 1740

The correct answer is c 1843

4)

Area of Front - 1.53 x 1.82 / 2 = 1.3923 m^2

Area of Back - 1.53 x 1.82 / 2 = 1.3923 m^2

Area of Side #1 - 2.41 x 1.96 = 4.7236 m^2

Area of Side #2 - 2.41 x 1.96 = 4.7236 m^2

Total Surface Area that gets wet - 12.2318 m^2

The correct answer is B 12.23 m^2

5)

The correct answer is d

The Happy Prince - Summary

Writing a Main Idea

In paragraph form, describe the main idea of the story.  Explain the moral, lesson or main message. Use examples from the story to support your idea.

TSThe main idea of ‘Title’ is…(State lesson)

NextIn the story,...(introduce the character and how they begin to learn their lesson)

Rest – In detail, describe how the lesson is learned

CSIn the end, (repeat main idea)

Sample: The Three Little Pigs

The main idea of 'The Three Little Pigs' is that hard work always pays off.  In the story, the first two pigs build their houses out of straw and sticks.  It is not hard to build them, but the houses are flimsy and the big, bad wolf has no problem blowing them down.  The third big works hard and builds a house out of bricks. The wolf is unable to blow that house down and the third pig lives happily ever after in his fortress.  In the end, the third pig proves that hard work always pays off in the end.

"The Giving Tree” is a story about a boy and a tree.  In the beginning, the boy spends a lot of time with the tree.  They play games like hide and seek and king of the forest.  The tree loves the boy and the boy loves the tree.  As the boy grows, he does not visit the tree as often.  He would often come to the tree and ask for things like money, a house or a boat. The tree does not have those things, so it gives the boy its apples, branches and even its trunk.  After all that, the only thing left of the tree is a stump.  In the end, the boy returns to the tree one last time.  He is no longer a boy but an old man. He tells it that he is tired and all he needs is a place to sit.  The tree offers its stump. The boys sits on the tree and they are happy. He learns that through his whole life, the tree never stopped loving him.

Sample Journal

Question: C.T. is really enjoying his voyage on the Mimi with his

grandfather.  Describe a time in your life when you have been on your own voyage.

C.T. is really enjoying his time on the Mimi with his grandfather and crew. Although, I have never been on a voyage on a boat, I have been on a number of trips. One of my greatest trips was my family vacation to Cuba. Two years ago during March Break, my family and I took a trip to Varadero, Cuba. It was an amazing trip with the beautiful, white sandy beach, warm sunlight and all-you-can- eat buffets.  The greatest day of the trip was the day we rented a car and drove to Havana. The people were so friendly and the city was filled with historical churches and buildings. It was one of the most memorable times of my life and I would love to visit again.

Legend

Introduction - Repeat the Journal Questions

Link - Link question to your experience

Topic Sentence - State topic simply

Next Sentence - Start with WHEN and add WHO and WHERE

Detailing Sentences - Three descriptive sentences describing the experience

A Good Week at CGCS

It was a good week at CGCS this week. The highlights of the week were definitely Mathletics and the Terry Fox Run. On Wednesday, all of the students in grades two to six gathered in the gym for a fun-filled day of Math. That is right, you read correctly, Math. Mathletics is a fun program where the students had to do grade level math questions. Correct questions were tabulated and added to the school score. Together, the students completed almost 3500 math questions.

Thursday was the morning of the annual the Terry Fox Run. Once again, the staff and students raised money to walk and run around the school for a full hour. It was a great event and everyone had a great time. Our morning class raised nearly $100 for the Terry Fox Foundation!

Please remember to send in your non-perishable food items for our Food Drive.

On Board for ‘The Second Voyage of the Mimi’

The Grade 5/6 classes will begin the year with the award winning series 'The Second Voyage of the Mimi'.  This is a language based program consisting of thirteen chapters in a continuing drama/adventure. The story is about life aboard the Mimi with Captain Granville and his grandson C.T., played by a young Ben Affleck.  In this series, the two Granvilles and a team of scientists explore the ancient Mayan Civilization in Mexico.

The study guide contains illustrated versions of the television segments adapted to a print format.  The students will read the chapters and complete related activities during the week. On Fridays, the class will watch the video episodes based on their readings.

* Scissors

* 1.5" binder

* 4 binder dividers

* Non-marking indoor running shoes

* Pencil case with pencils, pens and an eraser

* Enclosed pencil sharpener

* Protractor

*  Ruler

* Calculator

Dear Parents:

The students are beginning to plan and prepare their speeches.  Over the next few weeks, your child will be selecting and researching a topic.  He/She should be very selective in choosing a topic.  In class, we will be discussing possible topics and the selection process.  (Please note that grade 5 students will be doing biography projects.)

The steps to planning, writing, practising and presenting a speech will be taught in class.  Your child will have many opportunities to research topics and conference with peers and teachers.  Please ensure your child is prepared by bringing his/her speech material to school every day.  Although the students will be given this class time to prepare and practise their speeches, preparation and practise at home are essential to each student’s individual success in public speaking.

Writing Folders Go Home Today

The students are bringing home their Writing Folders for parents to see.  The writing folder contains various pieces of writing, such as journals, stories and book reports.  Please note that parents are expected to sign the agenda indicating that they have seen their child's folder.  Writing Folders should be returned to school on Monday.

Read All About IT!

The classes started a newspaper study today.  Over the next month, the students will be learning all about newspapers as they read and analyze copies of the Ottawa Citizen.  The Ottawa Citizen will be delivered to our school on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays for the month of March.  Thanks to the Parent Council for providing the funds to cover the cost of the newspapers and to the Ottawa Citizen for providing them at a discounted rate.

While the students are learning about the newspaper, they will be introduced to the various writing styles a newspaper provides.  They will be writing their own articles and putting them together to create their own newspapers. The completed projects will be displayed in the hallway outside of our classroom at the end of March. You can periodically ask your child to show you his/her work on Google Drive over the next month.

Note to Parents: The edge program scheduled for this Friday Feb 26th (which originally was a confirmation evening) is an evening of a Massive worship concert being held at St. Matthew Catholic High School from 6:00pm - 9:00pm.  There will NOT be an edge program running in the parish hall this Friday.

In Math, we have been working on decimals, fractions and percent.  This unit is very calculator dependent.  I have encouraged your child to bring in a personal calculator to use in class.  Although we do have calculators to lend out, they are different styles and often students have to share.  Your child will be using a calculator more often in class during term two and will definitely need one for the EQAO test.  It will help your child if he/she uses the same calculator on a consistent basis.

Congratulations to the afternoon grade 6 class for putting together a wonderful video on acceptance.  The video was shown at our assembly today.  To see the video, click the link below.  (Please note that although the video is on Youtube, it is not 'public'.  You must have the url in order to see the video.)

Introductory Class Newsletters

Please see the 'Class Notes and Letters' tab on the side menu for links to the introductory class newsletters.

* Scissors

* 1.5" binder

* 4 binder dividers

* Non-marking indoor running shoes

* Pencil case with pencils, pens and an eraser

* Enclosed pencil sharpener

* Protractor

*  Ruler

* Calculator

In preparation for the leave taking ceremony, I am asking all the grade 6 students to bring in a picture. The picture should be around age 3-5 years; the first day of school would be great. I will scan the pictures and return them. Please make sure the student’s name is clearly written on the back. If possible, you can scan the pictures and send them to me via Dale.Martin@ocsb.ca.

Students are not to show these pictures to anyone, in order to maintain an element of surprise for their Leave taking Ceremony.

Sample Book Report

'The Paper bag Princess'

by

Robert Munsch

Main Character

Princess Elizabeth is the main character of "The Paper Bag Princess". Elizabeth is about 13 years old and is small and skinny. She has wild hair and wears a burned paper bag dress. She has a burnt crown on her head and smells like ashes.Elizabeth is smart and cunning as she out smarted the dragon to save Ronald. She is also brave and strong. She went to the dragon’s cave and faced the fire breathing dragon. Princess Elizabeth is the hero of the story.

Setting

The setting takes place over the time of one day in Medieval Times. There are princesses, princes, knights, kings, and queens. There is a dragon's lair in a big cave with huge wooden doors. The ground is littered with horse and knight bones that the dragon has killed. The Dragon's lair is surrounded by burnt forests. The castle is close to the Dragon's lair and there is a pathway of stones leading to it.

Another setting is the princess’s room.  It  is surrounded by pictures of the snobby prince, Prince Ronald. She has a queen sized bed all to herself.

Plot

Elizabeth is going to marry Ronald.  One day, the dragon destroys the castle and captures Ronald.  The dragon takes Ronald to his lair to get his shiny gold. Elizabeth clothes get burned off and she finds a paper bag on the ashes to wear as a dress. She knew were the dragon was because the trail way of bones and ashes. She decided to be brave and try to rescue the prince.

In the end Elizabeth, outsmarts the dragon. She tells the Dragon to burn down 50 forests and his next breath only a little dust came out. Elizabeth told the dragon to fly around the world in 10 seconds and he did it again and again. After he did it again, he was so tired he fell asleep.  So Elizabeth tried to rescue Ronald .  Ronald was stubborn and said " Come back and rescue me when you don't smell like burnt ashes, and when your wearing a proper dress and not a paper bag." So Elizabeth ran out of the castle and called Ronald a bum. (He truly is a bum)

I have given the class a few suggestions to add to their Christmas lists:

1) Full pencil case - Students should have a soft pencil case with the following items in it:

- pencils

- pens

- 15 cm ruler

- protractor

- calculator (that fits in pencil case)

- eraser

2) A good book - The class will be beginning an independent book report when they come back in January.

Your child can choose a book from the library or a book from home.

Class Updates

Math

The students will be finishing their unit on place value with a test on Friday.  This is the second test of the unit and will focus on decimals.  Over the past few weeks, the class has been practising reading, writing and expanding numbers to the thousandths place.

Our next unit will be on patterning.  The students will be looking to extend patterns and apply two-step patterning rules.

Basic facts continue to be stressed in the class.  The students have been practising two-digit by two-digit multiplication, three-digit by one-digit division, as well as timestable facts.  If your child has not committed the timestable chart to memory, please practise with him/her on a daily basis.  Quick and easy recall of timestable facts will assist your child in all areas of the math curriculum.

English

The students completed the Voyage of the Mimi series last week.  As a concluding project, the students have split into groups and are pretending they are shipwrecked on a deserted island.  The castaways must use supplies from the shipwreck and island to build models of shelters.

The class has also started narrative writing this week.  The students will be practising the skills of narrative writing and using these skills to write haunted house stories for Halloween next week.  Please remember that your child uses Google Apps for his/her writing at school.  As a result, you have access to it at home.  Make sure you ask your child to share his/her story with you next weekend.

Hi Mr. Wakefield’s Grade 6’s

I wanted to wish you all a great holiday and a Happy New Year. I hope you all have a great Christmas break spent with family and friends.

A Message from Miss Roach

After Halloween, the class will begin an amazing novel study.  The story, ‘Time For Andrew’, is an exciting book about time travelling.  It deals with two boys from different eras meeting in an attic and the exciting events that unfold after they change places.  The messages and language in the story are mesmerizing and make it a joy to read and teach.

The students will be learning a number of skills by completing the novel study.  Some of these include:

•  Paragraph formation

•  Reading comprehension

•  Descriptive language adjectives and adverbs

•  Dictionary skills

•  Figurative language

•  Using support from the text

•  Oral, independent and

            small group reading

Please take the time to discuss the story with your child, or read along with the class.  It will be a rewarding experience for you and your child.

Music

The class was introduced the the ukulele this week.  The students will be learning to play the ukulele in music class this year.  Due to the nature of the instrument, the children will be learning to play chords and using chording techniques to play songs.

They have already learned their first song, 'Brother John'.

Science

The students recently began a space unit in science class.  The children began by learning about the planets in our solar system.  Your child will be adopting a planet and making a promotional poster to highlight all of the interesting facts about it.

Homework Update

April 15, 2014

Due to the recent rash of absent students and school activities, many students have missed daily activities.  As a result, I have assigned a number of things for the students to work on independently at home and during available class time.

1) Good Copy 'How-To' Magazine Articles should be finished Wednesday, April 23.  (See below and side menu for more details.)

2) Speeches - Students may choose to present their speeches today, Thursday, April 16 or Tuesday, April 22.

3) Students are expected to log on to IXL and work on 3D Geometry skills for 30 minutes this week.  If they complete these skills, they can choose other skills to practise and reinforce.  I have also told fifth grade students that they may work at the grade 6 level if they choose. If your child does not have access to a computer or internet at home, he/she may choose to stay in during recess to work on his/her IXL activities.  (See below for more details)

Extra - Please also remember that your child has a Raz-Kids Reading account.  He/She has a number of personally leveled readers and related activities that he/she can work on.

Magazine Study

April 15, 2014

The class began a magazine study last week. Over the next few weeks, the students will be reading various magazines and analyzing a number of articles.  The class will also be given opportunities to create different magazine articles of their own.  The unit will conclude with each student selecting a personal article to contribute to a class magazine.

The students are currently working on their first personal article, a 'How-To' article.  Your child has selected a procedure to describe and broken it down into five or six steps.  He/She will also need an introduction, additional information, and a related picture.  Please note that I have attached some sample articles in the 'Magazine Study' section on the side menu.

In order to create a magazine-syle lay-out, all good copies of magazine articles will be done using the Draw program of Google Apps.  Ask your child to show you his/her 'How-To' article this weekend.

IXL Math Website

April 14, 2014

I am pleased to tell you that we will be using a website called IXL in our classroom for the next 30 days.

IXL is a comprehensive math review site with an unlimited number of practice questions in hundreds of skills—all of which are aligned to the provincial curriculum.

One of the best things about IXL is that your child can access it from home, so you have a chance to see your child's progress!

To get your child started on your home computer, please follow these easy steps:

Go to www.IXL.com

Enter your child's username and password in the upper right corner and click the button to sign in.

Username: (firstname-last initial-719) ex.: christopherw719

Note: There are a few exceptions. Those students usernames are in their agendas.

Password: (School Password)

Click on Maths at the top of the page and navigate to your child's grade level.

Find a skill to practise.

Meeting

February 10, 2014

Parent Information Meeting for parents of grade 6 students at St. Matthew High School at 7 pm.

I just wanted to let you know that I have ceased giving homework for the rest of the year.  (The calendar year, not school year.) As a result, your child may have an inordinate amount of free time next week and over the Christmas holiday.  I have discussed this free time with the children and suggested they use some of their time to practise their reading, typing and times-table skills.

I have links for websites to practise all three of these skills.  Our typing tutor is a great program.  I have asked the students to try to learn the 'home row'.  Quick and easy recall of times-tables is also essential in all areas of the Math Curriculum.  Finally, I have told the students that the only way to become a better reader is to practise their reading.  Raz-Kids (link on side menu) is a personalized reading program for your child.

I hope your child takes advantage of this 'free' time to improve his/her skills for school.

Best regards,

Mr. Wakefield

Absences

English - Main Idea, Relate and Retell

Updated February 4, 2014

Now that the class has finished our novel study, 'Tuck Everlasting', the students will be learning various styles of writing to report on their reading. This week, the children will be reading various grade and age appropriate reading materials and writing 'retells' and 'relates', as well as describing the main idea of the stories. In class, we will be practising these skills together, in small groups, and individually. Your child has an outline of the various styles in his/her homework binder. The following is an outline for each:

Main Idea - In paragraph form, describe the main idea of the story.  Explain the moral, lesson or main message.  Use examples from the story to support your idea.

**** Make sure you do not do another 'Retell'.  ****

Example

The main idea of 'The Three Little Pigs' is that hard work always pays off.  In the story, the first two pigs build their houses out of straw and sticks.  It is not hard to build them, but the houses are flimsy and the big, bad wolf has no problem blowing them down.  The third big works hard and builds a house out of bricks.  The wolf is unable to blow that house down.  The third pig proves that hard work always pays off in the end.

Relate - Relate the story to a personal experience. You may use one of these formats:

- Text to Text (relate the story to another book)

- Text to World (relate to an event in the world

- Text to Self (relate to a personal experience)

***  MAKE sure your topic sentence(s) explain the link between the story and your experience.  For example; “In the story the 'Three Little Pigs', the pigs all build houses. This reminds me of when my family moved into our first house. Although we did not actually build it, the house was brand new...”***

Retell - In paragraph form, summarize the main elements of the story. The opening sentence about what the story is about, followed by the characters, setting and main problem...For example; “The Three Little Pigs” is a story about three brothers that learn some valuable lessons about the value of hard work. In the story, three brothers head out into the world to build houses.

        The rest of the paragraph:

          - Describe the event(s) that link between main problem and solution

- Solution (how the main problem is resolved)

Math - Geometry

January 27, 2014

The students began to work with angles today in Math class.  Over the next few weeks, the class will be learning about angles, triangles and other polygons.  Your child will be using a protractor to measure and draw angles and construct triangles.  At home, you can ask your child about various angles and polygons that make up the real world.

Better Answers

January 17, 2014

The students have been working on Better Answers in class.  The Better Answer Formula is a process that

students can use to help them write well-organized, good-looking, smart-sounding paragraphs when answering

questions on reading materials.

The students are encouraged to answers questions with at least three sentences:

Sentence #1 - Restate the question as a statement

Sentence #2 - Describe and/or explain the answer

Sentence #3 and 4 - Add additional detail to explain why or how, or add personal insight.

Please have a look at your child's answers in his/her 'Tuck Everlasting' homework this weekend to see if he/she is using the 'Better Answers Formula.

Electricity

January 13, 2014

Our next unit in science will be shocking!  Over the next few months the class will be learning all about electricity.  Electricity is a form of energy that students encounter every day. Students will already be familiar with many of the uses of this convenient source of energy. Building on their prior learning, students will explore devices that convert electricity to other forms of energy. The building of circuits will further strengthen students' understanding of how electrical systems work.

We live in an age when everyone is concerned about how we use electrical energy and how we will continue to meet the demand for it. Students will be given the opportunity to think about how electrical energy can be conserved both at home and at school and about alternative ways of producing energy. They will learn to think critically about the information and ideas they encounter.  In addition, it is important that students learn to identify and demonstrate an understanding of practices that ensure their personal safety and the safety of others when working with and around electricity.

Math - Measurement

November 29, 2013

The class began to work with measurement in Math class. Last week, the students learned about the metric system and conversion of linear metric units.

Over the next few weeks, the class will be working with perimeter and area. The students will be expected to draw rectangles given various perimeters and areas.

In class, the students are working on designing and constructing blueprints of zoos.  They will be calculating the cost of the fencing  for the animal pens (perimeter) and ensuring the animals have enough room to live (area).  The zoos will be hanging on the walls outside of our classroom.

Tuck Everlasting

November 29, 2013

The students began an exciting novel study last week.    The following is a summary of 'Tuck Everlasting':

This story is a fantasy about a family named Tuck who accidentally stumble upon a spring in a wood, which has the ability to give eternal life. They don’t realize at first what they have drunk until they realize that their bodies are not aging and they cannot be hurt or harmed in any way. They travel quietly around the countryside; never staying in one place too long so that people will not realize their secret. Into this family comes Winnie Foster, a little girl in search of freedom. She learns their secret and falls in love with them so deeply that she will do anything to protect them. The family and Winnie then must face a villain who would steal their secret for himself.

Better Answers

The students will be reading the chapters in class and completing related activities.  Please note that we will continue to work on 'Better Answers' in our chapter work.  Students are expected to provide answers in short paragraph form.  The first sentence of their answers should restate the question.  The remainder of the paragraph explains the answer and tells 'why'and 'how'.  Answers should be 2-4 sentences in length.

Science Test Tuesday

November 29, 2013

The students will be writing their science test on Matter on Tuesday. In class, we made study sheets to help prepare for the test.

Please note that science duotangs will also be turned in on Tuesday.  The students must have the activities completed by this time.
