Administrative Guidelines
Students
Students may work for up to 20 hours per week during the semester and up to 35 hours per week during the summer. Hourly positions may be appointed as work study or non-work study. Hiring managers can now view applicants’ work study eligibility status through Handshake. NYU's on-campus employment policies (NYC pay transparency legislation, sick leave, time off, etc.) are managed by the Wasserman Center
Undergraduate (UG)
UG students are typically appointed to hourly-paid roles as either non-work study or work study
When appointed as tutors, UG students may also be paid a flat rate dollar ($) amount for the semester
The minimum compensation rate is $16.50 per hour, effective January 1, 2025
Graduate (GA)
Eligible GA students are part of the Graduate Student Employee Union (Local 2110)
Grading, tutoring & science research assistant appointments are non-union eligible positions, while all other appointment types are union eligible

Work Study Pilot - Provost Office
The Provost Office has launched a new College Work Study (CWS) program. Work study is a valuable benefit and the Provost Office wants to encourage and facilitate hiring work study eligible students.
Faculty may utilize their faculty research or professional development funds to hire work study eligible students. Departmental work study budgets will NOT be required to support the appointments. A&S authorizes the swap of annual faculty research/ professional development budgets with federal work study (FWS) contingent on budget and fund balance availability.
Part Time Faculty
Overview
Part time faculty (adjuncts) are primarily appointed as Instructors of Record
Adjunct appointments follow the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) between NYU and Local 7902
Per the CBA, adjunct Instructors of Record are paid per "Contact Hour" with an additional "Administrative Service Payment (ASP)"
Additional compensation is provided as an “Other Academic Duty” for completing OEO 150: NYU Sexual Harassment Prevention Training
Academic HR
A&S Academic Appointments provides HR management for adjuncts and oversees additional types of adjunct transactions, such as Article X letters, the Adjunct Professional Development Fund, & the Adjunct Technology Fund
A&S HR
A&S HR maintains the Adjunct Appointment Policy for Current Arts & Science Administrators. Overall, all Arts & Science Administrators must receive pre-approval from Arts & Science Human Resources in order to hold an adjunct teaching assignment. Also, Clerical/Technical employees covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the University and UCATS Local 3882 may not simultaneously hold a dual appointment as adjunct faculty
Full Time Faculty
Overview

Academic Appointments (HR)
A&S Academic Appointments manages additional types of faculty appointments, such as leaves/sabbaticals, annual merit increase, workload relief, summer salary, & administrative appointments
Faculty Advancement
The A&S Office of Faculty Advancement is responsible for handling issues concerning full-time faculty, specifically those transactions involving initial appointment, third-year reviews, promotion & tenure, & retirement
NYU Academic Appointments
The Office of Academic Appointments administers the University’s policies governing academic appointments on behalf of the Provost & the President
The NYU Faculty Handbook describes the important University policies & practices as they apply to the Faculty of the University

The Postdoctoral Appointments Policy for NYU Washington Square provides the academic framework for these appointments
Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP)
NYU OSP provides pre-award and post-award research administration service and support
OSP has clarified that Researchers may also work as adjuncts and would NOT have to reduce their effort on a grant as the adjunct appointment would be excluded from the Institutional Base Salary (IBS) and would be considered "Extra-service pay"
