Process Description / Outline

1. Federal Work Study (FWS) is a financial aid award that allows undergraduate and graduate students to work on-campus while completing their studies. Students are awarded FWS as part of their financial aid package based on their FAFSA

2. As part of the award, 75% of gross wages are supported by a government grant, while 25% of wages (plus fringe) are charged to the Department

3. In addition to a student’s award, Departments and Programs must have an available FWS budget to support the 25% cost

• Timesheets for Federal Work Study (FWS) students must be approved in order for them to be accurately charged to a department’s approved Federal Work Study Budget. If a FWS timesheet is not approved, it will be automatically charged to non-federal work study accounts

1. FWS budgets are allocated each year. Additional budget may be available on request. Email Joseph Wright, Senior Director, Fiscal Affairs for assistance

1. How do I hire a FWS student?

   1. Check your UDW budget report for available FWS budget (account 51118)

   2. Find a student via the Wasserman Center and NYU Handshake

   3. Submit the appointment information to A&S Payroll. Please see the A&S Payroll Guide

2. What are the dates for work-study appointments?

   1. Please refer to Wasserman Center communications or email fas.payroll@nyu.edu

3. How many hours per week can a student work?

   1. Students can work up to 20 hours/week during the Fall & Spring semesters and 35 hours per week during the Summer, but work study funding typically cannot be used for summer work. Contact A&S Payroll for details about summer work study options
