Federal Work Study (FWS) is a financial aid award that allows undergraduate and graduate students to work on-campus while completing their studies. Students are awarded FWS as part of their financial aid package based on their FAFSA
As part of the award, 75% of gross wages are supported by a government grant, while 25% of wages (plus fringe) are charged to the Department
In addition to a student’s award, Departments and Programs must request an increase to their budget to support the work-study expenses. Arts & Science fully funds student work-study expenses by increasing Departmental budgets on request
Work study appointments cannot be charged to sponsored projects (Funds 24/25), but can be charged to NYU internal accounts (Fund 10 or 20)
Timesheets for Federal Work Study (FWS) students must be approved in order for them to be accurately charged to a department’s approved Federal Work Study Budget. If a FWS timesheet is not approved, it will be automatically charged to non-federal work study accounts
Arts & Science fully funds student work-study expenses by increasing Departmental budgets on request. Please contact your Departmental fiscal analyst to request additional budget for your work-study hires
