Researchers/Post-Docs

In accordance with definitions approved by Arts and Science, please submit proposed appointment paperwork for Researchers, Post-Doctoral Associates and Post-Doctoral Fellows for review by FAS Academic Appointments.  We look forward to receiving your draft appointment letters prior to confirming arrangements with prospective researchers and post-docs.  Please provide as much advance notice as possible to ensure timely review, pending approval and subsequent payroll processing.  We ask that all changes to existing appointments mirror the aforementioned workflow. 

*Note that all positions (excluding postdoctoral fellows) must be advertised in Interfolio prior to extending an offer.  Please forward a draft for review and approval.

FULL TIME CLASSIFICATIONS:

Junior Laboratory Associate - minimum salary guideline $38,000

Required education level: BS; 0-1 years of experience with a general expectation of approximately 2 years at the junior rank.  First level training post in laboratory research support; requires science-specific education, which provides framework for understanding research methods and laboratory procedures.  Instructive guidance provided by faculty adviser. 

Laboratory Associate - minimum salary guideline $42,000

Required education level: BS or MS; minimum 2 years experience with a general expectation of at least 2 years at the associate rank. Demonstrated competence in first level laboratory research support; affords continued training for related specialized career path. Instructive guidance provided by faculty adviser builds upon skills amassed as junior level trainee.

Senior Laboratory Associate* - minimum salary guideline $56,484 (per NIH scale)

Required education: BS or MS (preferred); minimum 5 years experience with the expectation of a career path at the senior rank.  Demonstrated competence in research support activities, attested to by advanced training or extensive experience.

Postdoctoral Associate - minimum salary requirement $62,500**

Years of experience: 0-5; post-PhD trainee preparing for research scientist career path.  Provides transition to career independence through the development of professional skills; supervision by senior scientist incorporating individual development plan in support of training goals and those of faculty mentor; publication of research findings/scholarship during postdoc appointment period.

Research Scientist - minimum salary requirement $62,500**

Years of experience: minimum 5 post PhD. Outstanding research competence, attested to by PhD and minimum five years experience.  Exceptions to the Ph.D. education level and 5 years of experience can be made for outstanding individuals with specialized skills. 

Senior Research Scientist - minimum salary requirement $62,500**

Years of experience: minimum 8-10 post PhD.​  Highest research competence, attested to by PhD and equivalent level independent research and publications.

**When determining the salary for individual postdoctoral associates and fellows, we strongly encourage you to consider years of relevant postgraduate experience, both at NYU and elsewhere.  The following table provides a recommended salary scale, in which each year of relevant postgraduate experience is recognized by a 2.5% increase to the minimum salary.

FULL TIME NON-SCIENCE:

Researcher- minimum salary guideline $40,000 (commensurate with experience)

Years of experience: zero and up; required education: BA/BS or MA/MS (preferred)

*For all Researchers who hold PhDs, the AY2023/24 required minimum salary level is $62,500

PART TIME CLASSIFICATIONS:

We welcome proposed part time appointments at the level of Assistant Research Scientist/Scholar Non-exempt and Associate Research Scientist/Scholar Non-exempt. Minimum hourly pay rates are $18 and $26 respectively, for a maximum of 27 hours per week.  Following are general guidelines. 

Assistant Research Scientist/Scholar Part Time Non-exempt

Provides research assistance for various projects performing routine and/or recurring tasks.

Associate Research Scientist/Scholar Part Time Non-exempt

Performs data collection/analysis and conducts experiments exercising moderate use of independent judgement.
