Concert - Tuesday, May 7

Post date: Apr 25, 2019 2:54:35 PM

We have less than 2 weeks left before our final concert! The students are hard at work polishing our music to perform for you on May 7! Below is the concert invitation, feel free to invite family and friends!! Here are the important details:

SPRING BAND CONCERT - Tuesday, May 7

High School Performing Arts Center

6:00 doors open

6:10 students arrive and meet in HS band room

6:30 concert begins

** Please wear gray Lakewood Music t-shirt or other gray shirt/Norwalk shirt with jeans/khakis

** The concert will be live-streamed on Norwalk Warriors Live on YouTube for those unable to attend.

** We hope to have all our musicians to perform our best, if your child is unable to perform please let me know, thanks!

Spring Book Fair

I have a fun collection of books that will be on display for students to look through at the end of April and beginning of May! These music books are from Rieman Music, available in most every instrument and playable by 5th graders. Some come with a CD and some have an audio downloadable! Click HERE for the order form - DUE May 11. They will also be on display at our May 7 concert!

Band Madness Bracket Challenge

This is our final home practice challenge! Students are having a friendly competition to see who can practice more songs in their book or lines of their band music. We have just finished Round 4 and have 1 round left! Any students that lost in an earlier round are still in the Comeback Group and can still earn a prize for continuing to practice!! No matter the result of our fun competition, their practicing has paid off with more confident notes and rhythms in the music for our concert!!

Some of the fun prizes available are tickets or passes to: Des Moines Symphony, Celebration in Brass (Drum Corp show), Pole Position Raceways, Iowa Cubs, Chick-fil-A, Air Lanes Bowling, Climb Iowa, Norwalk Shop, Pizzeria Pyra, Emerge Academy, SkyZone, Get Air, Arbys, Taco Johns and MORE! Check out the "Final 4" winners from each band!

"Bill" Challenge

I have challenged the students to "Be Like Bill" since we had been forgetful in remembering instruments for band! Each section of the band earns a sticky note to build a tower on a door. When the sticky notes reached the top of the door we invited some of the high school band students to join and play with us during Big Band! Integrity Band reached the top first and got a chance to play with Grace, Allie, Lilly and Maddy from the HS on Apr. 23. Victory will get to play with HS students later in May.

6th Grade Band

Students currently in 5th grade band will be automatically signed-up for 6th grade band as we hope they will continue their music journey next year. One main difference in 6th grade band is that nearly all students will have their band lesson during their band period. They will NOT miss any core classes for a band lesson! If they wish to drop band, please e-mail Rachel Chapman, middle school counselor by May 1 (rchapman@norwalk.k12.ia.us).

6th grade band students will get the opportunity to have Mr. Heltman and Mr. Hoffman (we are excited to welcome Adam Hoffman to the Norwalk Band family next year, he has teaching experience in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and most recently Texas!). Students may also have Mrs. Krupke for lessons. 6th grade band will have 4 performances, including Solo Festival and will be graded with similar standards-based guides.

I highly encourage students continuing to play in 6th grade to stick with their current instrument, trying to switch to another instrument can be frustrating since their peers will be continuing to play at a 6th grade level while they are back to learning the beginning basics.
